
KINABATANGAN: A man was killed while a woman injured after the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a roadside drain at Kg Paris 2, here, on Sunday afternoon.
Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Suriyadi Darwis said the 56-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Health Ministry.
While the second victim, a 53-year-old female passenger, he said sustained injuries and was taken to Lahad Datu Hospital in her family’s vehicle for treatment.
He said victim’s body was later handed over to the police for further action.
In the 1.06pm incident, Suriyadi said the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Control Centre received an emergency call via the 999 hotline before dispatching a team of five firefighters from the Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene.
He said the fire engine arrived at the scene at 1.51pm after travelling approximately 50 kilometres.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found that the accident involved a pickup truck which had veered off the road on its own before ending up in a roadside drain.
“The fire and rescue team successfully extricated the two occupants from the vehicle,” he said here on Sunday.
The operation, which was also assisted by police and the Health Ministry, concluded at 3.15pm after firefighters confirmed that the area was safe.
