Driver responsible for deaths of two teenagers tests positive for drugs

THE driver of the car believed to have caused an accident that killed two teenage girls on Jalan Padang Tembak in Teluk Intan, on Sunday, has tested positive for drugs.

Hilir Perak District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Chua Kok Lian said the matter was confirmed following an initial urine test on the 28-year-old local man.

According to him, the suspect is now being detained to assist in the investigation after testing positive for benzodiazepine drugs and is suspected of driving under the influence of illegal substances.

"Initial investigations found that the accident occurred at about 6.35 pm when the car driven by the suspect lost control while trying to overtake the vehicle in front of him.

"The car then hit a motorcycle, another car in front and a boy on the side of the road," he said in a statement on Monday.

He said that as a result of the accident, two teenage girls were confirmed dead at the scene.

He said the driver of the car and the boy who was also involved were taken to Teluk Intan Hospital for treatment.

"The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) and Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while the drug-related investigation is being conducted under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"Further investigations are still ongoing to identify the exact cause of the accident," he

Chua asked the public who witnessed the incident or have relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation by contacting the Traffic Investigating Officer, Inspector Mohd Amirrudin Shafiei at 013-9126959 or contact any police station.

It was earlier reported that two teenage girls died after the motorcycle they were riding was involved in an accident involving two cars on Jalan Padang Tembak here yesterday evening.

It is understood that the deceased victims have been identified as Nur Dania Arissa, 17, and Nur Atikah Abdullah, 16, students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Setia and SMK Raja Muda Musa, respectively. – July 27, 2026
