Driver to be charged tomorrow over child's death in school van

THE driver of a school van who was arrested in connection with the case of a five-year-old boy who was found unconscious in the vehicle at Taman Bukit Indah in Iskandar Puteri, Johor last week will be charged tomorrow.

Iskandar Puteri Police Chief M Kumarasan said the 56-year-old local male will be charged at the Batu Pahat Sessions Court.

“Earlier, the suspect was remanded for seven days starting May 1 under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001 for neglect and negligence involving a child,” he said.

On May 1, a five-year-old boy was reportedly found unconscious in a school van after being believed to have been left in the vehicle for almost five hours in Taman Bukit Indah.

Kumarasan said the victim was found unconscious in the van at around noon on Wednesday.

He explained that the victim, who attends kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah, was said to have boarded the van from his family’s residence before arriving in front of the kindergarten at around 7.30 am.

Following this, the police arrested a man who works as a school van driver in the Taman Bukit Indah area at 2.40 pm the same day. – May 6, 2025
