Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old woman was fined RM5,000 or seven months jail by the Traffic Court here, Wednesday, for careless and inconsiderate driving which resulted in an accident three months ago.

Lau Siew Jing pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence while driving a Proton X50 car at Jalan Tuaran Bypass on Sept 11, at 5.40am resulting in an accident and causing severe injuries to motorcyclist Hakim Jani, 56.

AdvertisementThe facts of the case presented by the prosecution to the court stated that investigations revealed the motorcyclist was travelling on the right lane along a straight road when Lau’s car, which was on the left lane, suddenly changed into the right lane.

Due to the close proximity, the motorcyclist collided with the right side of Lau’s vehicle, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown onto the road and lose consciousness.

Read more The motorcyclist sustained severe head injuries and was taken to hospital where he remained in ICU for about two months.

The driver of the Proton was unharmed.

The findings indicated that Lau had changed lane without due caution, resulting in the collision and injuries to the motorcyclist.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});Lau was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amended 1999) which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and liable to jail of up to 12 months, on conviction.

The court also ordered her driving licence to be endorsed with details of the conviction.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man was jailed a day each and fined RM10,000 or eight months jail for drink-driving.

Walter Wedarno admitted to committing the offence while driving a Perodua Axia on Aug 5, 2023, at 2.50am, along Jalan Coastal here.

The charge under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020, provides for a jail term of up to two years and fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, on conviction.

In another case, a 28-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of a man, here, eight months ago.

Su Her Fu pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Su was accused of driving a Nissan X-Trail vehicle in a dangerous manner and causing the death of Aierul Shafiq Ariffin, 19, along Jalan Coastal on April 18, 2024, at 7.54pm.

The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act carries a jail term of between five years and 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, if convicted.

The court fixed Jan 15, next year for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM3,000 in a surety.
