Nissan’s latest self-driving car technology was tested in Yokohama, Japan, showcasing a vehicle that navigates city streets without a human driver.
Equipped with 14 cameras, nine radars, and six LiDAR sensors, the car detects its surroundings and responds to traffic in real time. The car is summoned through a mobile app, which sets its destination before the ride begins.
While still requiring human supervision, the test vehicle smoothly navigates through traffic and avoids obstacles.
The innovation aims to address Japan’s driver shortage due to its aging population. However, challenges remain, including public trust and legal questions surrounding liability in case of accidents.
