Kota Kinabalu: A government servant was charged in the Special Corruption Court here on Wednesday, with two counts of accepting bribes in exchange for driving licences bypassing Road Transport Department (RTD) tests.

Mohd Shah Baz Khan Abdul Wahid, 39, an RTD enforcement assistant, pleaded not guilty before Judge Jason Juga to both charges.

On the first charge, Mohd Shah allegedly obtained RM800 on April 26, 2022, when the sum was deposited into a Maybank Islamic account belonging to his wife, by a man as an inducement for the issuance of a driving licence to a woman without an RTD test.

On the second charge, Mohd Shah allegedly received RM1,200 on Oct 6, 2022, also through his wife’s account, from another man  to secure a licence for another individual without undergoing the RTD test. Both offences allegedly took place at Maybank Islamic Putatan Branch.

Each charged framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.

Jason fixed Oct 9 for mention and released the accused on bail of RM10,000 with RM2,000 deposited in one surety.

The court also granted the application by the prosecution for additional conditions to the bail and ordered the accused to report to the MACC office once in two months, to surrender his passport to the court on Sept 24 after his return from Sarawak and not to harass with any of the prosecution’s witnesses.

Earlier, MACC prosecuting officer Nur Sabina Ali proposed bail at RM10,000 with RM5,000 deposited in one surety with additional conditions.

Counsel Rupilik Alik representing the accused, requested a lower bail amount, citing among others that he is married with three school-going children and the sole breadwinner and still works as RTD enforcement assistant until now.
