The Duke of York's Theatre on St Martin's Lane will henceforth be known as the Tom Stoppard Theatre, ATG Entertainment confirmed this morning.

The decision pays tribute to the celebrated dramatist, who died in November 2025 at the age of 88.

ATG timed the announcement to coincide with tonight's opening of Arcadia at the venue, a production directed by Carrie Cracknell that transferred from the Old Vic.

The 640-seat playhouse has deep ties to Sir Tom Stoppard's body of work. His politically charged drama Rock 'n' Roll occupied the stage from 2006 to 2007, whilst a previous staging of Arcadia drew sold-out audiences in 2009.

The current West End run of Arcadia continues until September 12, 2026.

The venue first welcomed audiences in 1892 under the name Trafalgar Square Theatre before adopting its soon-to-be-former title three years later.

Crucially, the 1895 renaming honoured the Duke of York at that time, the future King George V, grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, rather than Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who would not be born for another 65 years.

Despite this historical fact, the title has become heavily associated with the controversial younger brother of King Charles in the public consciousness.

ATG Entertainment has emphasised that the renaming represents a positive celebration of Sir Tom's theatrical contributions rather than any response to modern royal scandals.

GB News has contacted ATG Entertainment, the company that operates the theatre, for comment. The People's Channel has also reached out to Mr Mountbatten-Windsor.

The company seized the opportunity presented by the Arcadia premiere to permanently honour what it describes as Britain's greatest modern playwright at a venue where some of his finest work was staged.

Social media users have responded to the news with enthusiasm. One person wrote: "I mean, that name had to go . . . Tom Stoppard was a genius playwright, it's only right it should be renamed in his honour."

Another commented: "Stoppard earned this. A living playwright getting that recognition while he's still here to see it matters."

Sir Tom's accolades include a record five Tony Awards for Best Play, three Olivier Awards, and an Academy Award for co-writing Shakespeare in Love. He received a knighthood in 1997 and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 2000.

This week also marks what would have been his 89th birthday on July 3.

Physical alterations to the theatre's exterior signage will occur over the coming months, subject to planning approval, whilst internal branding updates are expected within weeks.

Melanie Smith, Global CEO of ATG Entertainment, said: "We are proud to be the custodians of such a historic theatre, and believe today's announcement recognises the significant impact Sir Tom Stoppard has made to British Theatre."

Sabrina Stoppard, the playwright's widow, said: "Tom was in his element whenever he had a play on in the West End, so I am thrilled to bits that this theatre will be named after him. It means that his memory will live on, not just through his plays, but also through this building."

Producer Sonia Friedman, who brought Arcadia to the West End, added: "I had the privilege of producing many of Tom's plays, including at this theatre, and more importantly, of calling him a dear friend.

"We shared countless coffees opposite the theatre, and I can just imagine him looking up at his name on the building, utterly tickled pink."
