Dutch world champion Marrit Steenbergen broke the world record in the 100 metres freestyle at a meet in Rome on Saturday, swimming 51.68 seconds to beat the previous mark held by Sweden's Sara Sjöström.

The 26-year-old was three hundredths of a second faster than Sjöström's record, which had stood since 2017.

Only a few days ago, Sjöström also lost the world record in the 50m freestyle to US swimmer Kate Douglass.
