Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old e-hailing driver claimed trial to having 73.83 grammes of cannabis.

Sheikh Mohammad Hazmi Abdul Malik pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan to the charge against him on Monday.

The court was informed that the chemist’s report on the drug was ready.

Sheikh is accused of having the cannabis at 10.30pm on Jan 4, this year at a house in Taman Sri Kepayan.

The offence under Section 12(2) Dangerous Drugs Act and punishable under Section 39A(2)(r) of the same Act carries a jail term of between five years and life imprisonment, and whipping of not less than 10 strokes, on conviction.

The court set May 16 for a pre-trial case management.

Pending the date, Sheikh was ordered remanded further.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Bryan Francis appeared for the prosecution while Sheikh was not represented.
