AN e-hailing driver who allegedly chased a woman while holding a knife at a shopping mall last week faced two charges at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today.
The accused, Lim Toh Seng, 50, pleaded not guilty to both charges before Judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin.
For the first charge, the single father was charged with possessing a knife without a valid permit in a public place at around 9.30 pm last Saturday.
The charge was made under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1957, which provides for a jail sentence of not less than five years and not more than 10 years or a fine not more than RM10,000 or both upon conviction.
The offence was allegedly committed in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Melaka City in the Melaka Tengah district.
For the second charge, the accused was charged with intentionally causing fear to a 21-year-old female student at the same location by chasing her while carrying a knife.
The charge was made under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to two years or a fine or both upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Asri Abd Rahman Sidik offered bail of RM30,000 for the first charge and RM10,000 for the second charge, with additional conditions that the accused must not harass the complainant and must report to the nearest police station once a month.
Meanwhile, the accused's lawyer, Ishak Mohd Kari, requested that the bail amount be reduced on the grounds that the bail was intended to ensure the accused's presence in court and not as a punishment.
He said the accused was also about to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which of course, involved financial costs.
“The accused works as an e-hailing driver with an uncertain income, besides supporting his children alone after his wife returned to China.
“The accused also recently lost RM10,000 after being cheated by a Vietnamese woman before, which also affected his finances,” he said.
Judge Raja Noor Adilla then allowed bail of RM8,000 for the first charge and RM3,000 for the second charge, with one surety for each charge, along with additional conditions.
The case was set for mention on March 26. – February 12, 2026
