MANILA, Philippines — Due to persistent rain in Washington, Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala's final match against Jessica Pegula in the WTA 500 Mubadala D.C. Open has been suspended on Monday.
Upon suspension around 4 a.m. in Manila (Sunday 4 p.m. in Washington), Eala was trailing Pegula 0-1, having lost the first set 4-6, but held a 2-1 game lead in the second before play was halted.
As of posting time, the suspension has lasted five hours because rain kept returning, and efforts to dry the court were wasted.
Rain also delayed the match start, scheduled for Monday midnight in Manila, by 3 hours, thus stretching the finale into the morning.
Organizers have not yet announced if the match will be postponed until the next day.
