Early morning blaze razes sawmill workers’ dormitories in Kalabakan

TAWAU: Seven blocks of sawmill workers’ dormitories were razed in a fire on Jalan Brantian, Kalabakan early this morning.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Department chief, Jemishin Ujin stated that they received the call about the incident at 3.44 am, after which a team of eight firefighters, and several fire engines rushed to the location, approximately 67 kilometres away.

“Upon arrival, we found six blocks of workers’ dormitories, each consisting of 20 units, as well as one block with 10 units, fully engulfed in flames,“ he said when contacted today.

He mentioned that they were assisted by the Felda Umas Volunteer Fire Brigade.

“The fire was brought under control by 6 am, and completely extinguished by 6.57 am. No casualties were reported,“ he said, adding that the cause and estimated losses are still under investigation.
