How much do you think a person needs to start a family in Malaysia? RM5K, RM8K or RM15K? Compared to other high-cost-of-living countries, Malaysia is still a great choice for living a balanced life and starting a family. Though, due to inflation and many other factors such as political issues, the cost of living in Malaysia isn't as cheap as it was before, it is still considered bearable. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to agree to this.

Recently, a Malaysian man posted on Facebook of his views, claiming that if a person earns less than RM15,000 a month, he or she shouldn't consider dating or starting a family. This bold post and controversial viewpoint sparked a heated discussion online, with some agreeing and others arguing that love isn’t about money—it's about the connection between two people.

In his post, this man mentioned that back then, people could support and feed an entire family with just RM600, but in today's world, RM6,000 is only enough for an individual to live on. He goes on to suggest that anyone earning less than RM15,000 a month should avoid getting into relationships and marriage. He further added to his statement that a "normal" family should be able to afford regular domestic travel, at least one overseas trip a year, and even the cost of pets. Therefore, without a RM15K income, a family’s quality of life would be limited, and children would be forced to experience a life of scarcity.

While some people shared his sentiment, others were quick to challenge the idea that money should define a relationship. "Love can’t be measured by how much you earn," one person commented. Others added, "If you don’t plan on having kids, you can get married with just RM1,000 a month," emphasizing that a happy and fulfilling relationship doesn’t always depend on financial wealth.

Many also pointed out that living a luxurious lifestyle like the rich requires more than just a high income. "If you want to eat out every day and buy branded goods, RM10,000 isn’t enough," one netizen said. Others shared personal experiences, stating that even with a salary under RM3,000, they could raise a child and afford a car, showing that it’s possible to live a comfortable life without earning RM15,000 a month. Given this debate, what do you think? Is Malaysia's cost of living really high, or people should have lower expectations and quality of life? Comment and share your thoughts!
