Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos), in collaboration with Petronas and Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC), hosted a two-day workshop on managing gas pipeline safety at the Sabah International Convention Centre from Sept 30-Oct 1.

More than 150 representatives from 52 organisations, including government agencies, industry players, utility firms, and local communities, took part in the discussions aimed at strengthening Sabah’s energy infrastructure.

Ecos chief executive Datuk Nasser Abdul Wahid said the state’s pipelines cross villages, plantations, conservation areas, and industrial zones, which presents opportunities for growth but also safety risks if not managed carefully.

A leaders’ dialogue featuring officials from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Malaysia Petroleum Management, and SEC highlighted the need for structured risk management, customised guidelines, and greater community involvement in safeguarding pipelines.

The workshop concluded with calls to build clear right-of-way guidelines under the Sabah Energy Roadmap & Masterplan 2040, ensuring safety, sustainability, and energy security while balancing development and environmental needs.
