Football fans in Ecuador can look forward to significantly cheaper beer during the World Cup after President Daniel Noboa announced an exemption on an alcohol tax until the end of the tournament.

The measure is expected to cut beer prices in the South American country by 20%. Ecuador's team are at the June 11- July 19 tournament in North America and face Ivory Coast, Curaçao and Germany.

Ecuadorian restaurant association Corec expects beer sales to rise by 20% during the World Cup.

Beer consumption could even double on matchdays for the Ecuador team, it said.
