Ecuador's football body FEF has formally protested to World Cup organizers after Mexican fans tried to disturb their sleep ahead of the two teams' last 32 match later on Tuesday.
The FEF said the behaviour was far from "the principles of fair play and the unity for which a football World Cup should stand."
“For this reason, the FEF is making a respectful appeal to the competent authorities to pay greater attention to these incidents and to take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of our players, our coaching staff, and our fans.
Without going into specific details, it emphasized that it trusts “that these unsporting incidents will not overshadow the football celebration that unites two brotherly countries, and that respect, healthy competition, and fair play will prevail.”
Ecuador will always respond to such unsporting actions on the pitch, it said ahead of the match at Azteca Stadium.
Mexican news reports said that motorbike riders revved up their engines and honked outside the Ecuador team hotel in the Santa Fe district of Mexico City.
Police tried to disperse the fans amid reported social media calls to bring noise making objects such as loudspeakers, drums, trumpets and other to the vicinity of the hotel.
