Eight 2021 LRT crash victims sue Prasarana, RapidRail

JOHOR BARU – Eight individuals have filed a suit against RapidRail and Prasarana for alleged negligence over injuries sustained during the Kelana Jaya LRT crash that occurred in May 2021.

All of the individuals were LRT passengers who claimed that they boarded the train at the KLCC station around 8pm on May 24, 2021.

During the incident, an LRT train carrying passengers between the KLCC and Kg Baru stations collided with an empty train, injuring 213 passengers.

Based on the statement of claim filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on March 9, all plaintiffs assert they were physically and mentally healthy prior to the accident.

In the suit, all eight individuals claimed physical injuries and other losses as a result of the crash.

Some of the injuries experienced by the victims included lacerations on the head, broken teeth, concussions, and depression, among others.

All plaintiffs are seeking both general and special damages from the court.

However, the total amount claimed against both companies has yet to be quantified, as the plaintiffs are seeking the court's guidance on quantifying certain claims.

“The LRT accident, where all plaintiffs were present, was caused by the negligence of both defendants.

“The negligence of both defendants have resulted in physical injuries and other losses towards all plaintiffs,” the statement of claim said.

Furthermore, all plaintiffs alleged that both RapidRail and Prasarana failed to ensure their passengers were safe in their LRT trains.

Reference was also made towards Prasarana’s former non-executive chairman Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s press conference the day after the accident, with all plaintiffs accusing him of being cynical towards the incident.
