Police arrest eight, including a foreigner, after a fight at a Ramadan bazaar in Tawau; weapons seized and remand ordered for rioting.

TAWAU: Eight men have been detained in connection with a fight at the Sabindo Ramadan Bazaar.

Tawau district police chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the individuals, aged between 17 and 34, were arrested at various locations following a report lodged yesterday evening.

One of the detainees is a foreign national.

A motorcycle chain believed to have been used as a weapon in the altercation was also seized by police.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the fight stemmed from a dispute between two groups, but further investigations are underway,” Jasmin said in a statement.

All eight men have been remanded to assist investigations under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.

The incident, captured in two viral videos lasting 17 and 20 seconds, drew criticism from netizens.

Many online commentators urged that such violent incidents be avoided, especially in family-friendly areas during the holy month of Ramadan.
