Growing up in the 60s, "Eagle Pagoda" singlets and Good Morning towels are synonmous with those working in kopitiam and sundry shops in the small towns and kampungs.

They are classic, vintage-style men's 100% cotton undershirts highly popular in Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The brand combined the Eagle (representing strength and freedom) and the Pagoda (a classic East Asian architectural symbol) to build a recognizable mark of high-quality craftsmanship.

Founded in 1935 and manufactured in Hong Kong, it eventually shifted much of its focus and manufacturing to Malaysia, where the garment became a cultural staple.

These singlets are famous for their thin, highly breathable, and flexible "kain sejuk".

They provided a sleeveless, free-moving fit that helped keep laborers, workers, and everyday people comfortable in tropical, humid weather

Workers in traditional coffee shops frequently wear these singlets—often paired with a "Good Morning" towel draped over the shoulders because:

  • Cooling Comfort: The thin, highly breathable cotton absorbs sweat effectively.
  • Layering: It acts as an excellent base layer under a work shirt, preventing sweat stains while allowing good airflow.
  • Affordability and Durability: These iconic singlets are inexpensive, easy to replace, and have been a staple of working-class laborers since the 1960s

Many Malaysians might recognize this brand because it’s been worn by their dads or grandfathers.

It was, and still is, commonly worn as an undershirt beneath button-down shirts by working professionals, or on its own as casual loungewear by older generations.

Unlike many modern fast fashion shirts that mix in polyester, Eagle Pagoda uses 100% thin, absorbent cotton and the singlets were designed to act as a cooling base layer under heavier work shirts or uniforms.

Their singlets are lightweight and perfect for staying cool in tropical weather.

Today, while considered nostalgic by some, they are still highly sought after by older generations and young adults alike for their cooling properties.
