POLICE have opened a murder investigation after a 55-year-old man was found dead with multiple injuries at a recreation area behind Medan Bandar in Alor Setar yesterday.
Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said police received a call from a member of the public at 9.50am reporting a man lying unconscious at the Persisiran Sungai Raja recreation area.
“The victim was found lying under a hut and medical personnel from Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital confirmed his death,” he said on Thursday.
Syed Basri said the victim had injuries including a wound beneath the chin, bruising to the left side of his head, bleeding from his left ear, bruising around both eyes and wounds to his neck.
“There was also a small wound on the right side of his chin,” he said, adding that fresh blood at the scene suggested the man had died recently.
Police also found two broken wooden sticks near the body, but there were no signs of a struggle or drag marks at the scene.
Syed Basri said a 37-year-old local man working as a cleaner with the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) discovered the victim lying there with blood stains while working in the area at about 9.20am.
“The witness then informed his supervisor, who contacted the police,” he said.
The victim was identified as Wong Tek An, who lived in Kampung Tok Pasai, Kuala Kedah and had no criminal record.
Police believe the incident occurred between about 6am and 9.20am, when the body was discovered.
Syed Basri said Wong was believed to be homeless and had been staying at the recreation area since early this year.
“No arrests have been made so far. Police seized pieces of wood from a seat inside the hut for investigation,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, with the motive still under investigation. - September 24, 2026
