Elderly man loses RM114k after being duped by fake police investigator

A 69-YEAR-OLD man from Jerantut has lost RM113,550 after being duped by a telephone scam syndicate posing as police investigators and convincing him that he was involved in a money laundering case.

Jerantut district police chief Superintendent Nor Azman Yusof said the victim made about 20 cash withdrawals from ATMs at two bank branches in Jerantut and Bandar Jengka between Sept 11 and Oct 3, following instructions from the scammers.

“The victim, who was frightened, kept the matter from his son.

“Based on the victim’s report, he made about 20 cash withdrawal transactions through automated teller machines (ATMs) at two bank branches in Jerantut and Bandar Jengka between Sept 11 and Oct 3, as instructed by the suspect, involving a total of RM113,550,” he said.

Nor Azman said police received a report on Saturday after the victim realised he had been deceived when his son discovered what had happened.

He said the victim had initially received a call from an unidentified individual claiming to be a police investigating officer before being accused of involvement in money laundering.

The scammer then allegedly instructed him to withdraw money from his bank accounts.

Nor Azman urged the public to remain vigilant when receiving calls from unknown individuals and not to be intimidated by allegations or threats made over the phone.

“People are reminded that the police will never ask for money, PIN numbers, passwords or banking information over the telephone.

“If you receive a suspicious call, do not panic, do not make any transactions and immediately seek verification from the authorities or the nearest police station,” he said. - October 5, 2026
