How far should authorities go to enforce pedestrian safety? Hong Kong is taking no chances, and one elderly woman became the latest example of what happens when rules are ignored.
Refused to use pedestrian bridge
According to local reports, the woman was fined HK$2,000 (RM1,063.30) after she crossed the road at an undesignated spot the maximum penalty allowed for pedestrians.
She had refused to use the pedestrian bridge provided, and her actions were recorded by a passerby who captured the moment from above.
Authorities in Hong Kong treat jaywalking as a serious offence, stressing that such behaviour not only endangers the pedestrian but also disrupts traffic flow and puts other road users at risk.
The heavy fine is part of ongoing enforcement efforts meant to educate the public and reduce pedestrian-related road accidents, especially as many residents still ignore traffic signals and road signs.
This isn’t the first time Hong Kong pedestrians have been fined HK$2,000 for not crossing at designated areas.
The most common violations involve pedestrians who cross during the red traffic signal.
