FILIPINO gymnast Karl Eldrew Yulo seeks a potential second podium finish in the horizontal bar apparatus final of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Baku leg in Azerbaijan on Sunday.
The medal round is likely set for evening time in Manila.
At press time on Saturday, the senior-level debuting Yulo was going for his first medal in the floor exercise final.
Yulo finished sixth in the horizontal bar qualification with 13.533 points.
Like in floor exercise, the top eight from the qualifying round advanced to the medal stage of the tournament.
Yulo, the younger brother of double Olympic champ Carlos, finished fourth in floor exercise qualification.
“Because one event final is not enough. Despite a minor setback in his Vault and Pommel Horse Events, the fire inside Eldrew Yulo still burned as he secured his finals spot in the Horizontal Bar Event after placing 6th in the Qualifications,” said Yulo.
“With two event finals in his hands, let’s all pray for a safe and successful run for our budding champion.”
Yulo competes against Taiwanese Chia-Hung Tang (14.800), Colombian Angel Barajas (14.633), Kazakhs Milad Karimi (14.433) and Diyas Toishybek (13.700), and Russian Mukhammadzhon Iakubov (13.666).
Completing the horizontal bar final cast are Belgian Van Der Aa Kilan (13.466) and Ukrainian Vladyslav Hryko (13.200).
In his swan song at the junior level at the World Championships last November, he bagged a bronze medal each in floor exercise and horizontal bar.
The hope is that Yulo can replicate or even surpass that finish this time in the seniors division.
Meanwhile, another Filipino gymnast, Ivan Cruz competed in this World Cup Baku leg.
The two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, however, failed to advance to any apparatus final.
