The State Election Commission, Punjab, has issued directions regarding deferment of the General Elections to the Municipal Council, Kharar, in compliance with the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
As per the communication received from the State Election Commission, Punjab, the ongoing election process for Municipal Council, Kharar, including the nomination process presently underway, has been terminated with immediate effect.
Despite the High Court’s deferment of the polls, 104 nominations were received at the Kharar SDM office over three days, as no written orders had been issued. Chaos prevailed on the final day as candidates rushed to submit their forms in the absence of clear directions.
The decision follows the High Court’s order dated May 15, 2026 in CWP No. 14752 of 2026, Kulwant Singh vs. State of Punjab, concerning the inclusion of voters from adjoining prescribed areas related to MC Kharar.
A public notice regarding the deferment has now been displayed at the offices of the Returning Officer, Kharar, and the Municipal Council Kharar. Candidates who have already filed their nomination papers for MC Kharar would be entitled to refund of nomination fee as per the directions issued by the State Election Commission.
Further action regarding conduct of elections to Municipal Council Kharar would be undertaken after receipt of fresh notification from the Department of Local Government, Punjab.
