Election results show rejection of Anwar, Zahid, unity govt: Muhyiddin

SHAH ALAM – Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last night said the election results in six peninsula states is a referendum showing that the majority has rejected the unity government.

He said PN has captured 60% or 146 seats, mostly Malay-majority constituencies, out of the 245 seats up for grabs in the state polls.

Notably, PN successfully regained control of Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu, he said.

“PN had also made major inroads in Selangor, winning 22 seats compared to only five seats the bloc held before…

“The success also means PN has denied a two-thirds majority to Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional in Selangor. The state has been known as their stronghold. If the turnout was bigger, PN would be able to capture Selangor,” he said at a press conference held at Concorde Hotel Shah Alam this morning.

Muhyiddin also highlighted PN’s substantial gains in Penang, claiming 11 out of the 15 Malay-majority seats and delivering a big blow to PH as PN won all the state constituencies under the Permatang Pauh federal seat.

He claimed that PN’s triumph in the Malay-majority constituencies underscores Umno’s diminishing relevance among the Malays, as the party could only secure 19 out of the 108 seats it contested.

“This means Umno lost severely or 82% of the seats the party contested in this election,” said Muhyiddin.

He said the election results signify the rejection of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Muhyiddin argued that both Anwar and Zahid now have the moral obligation to step down from their posts as prime minister and deputy prime minister, respectively. – The Vibes, August 13, 2023
