KINABATANGAN: An elephant carcass, believed to have drifted downstream from the Lot 5 area towards Sukau, was discovered by Kinabatangan River residents on Wednesday.
Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) Director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said the carcass was suspected to be the same pachyderm reported to have fallen ill several weeks ago.
Mohd Soffian said the department could not act on the earlier report because officials were unable to verify which party had received the complaint.
He said JHL personnel could not reach the site immediately as the department's boat had been deployed to install signboards and had yet to return, but an inspection team is expected to be dispatched early Thursday morning.
He added that further information would be released once wildlife officers have completed their examination and gathered all relevant details.
