Manchester United and Manchester City are set to go head-to-head this summer over Elliot Anderson, with both clubs viewing the Nottingham Forest midfielder as a key piece for the future.

With Casemiro having announced his Old Trafford departure at the end of the season, United’s top priority will be reshaping their midfield. That responsibility falls to Christopher Vivell and Jason Wilcox.

In that search, one name stands out above all others: Elliot Anderson. The Nottingham Forest player fits the profile of what Michael Carrick needs, pairing well with Kobbie Mainoo in his preferred setup.

United face stiff competition for Anderson, but unlike the situation with Antoine Semenyo, they will not lose out for the same reasons.

Semenyo slipped through United’s grasp in January over wage demands, with the club continuing efforts to keep their pay structure in check following years of financial imbalance.

Anderson, though, should not pose the same issue.

According to Ben Jacobs on The United Stand, the Nottingham Forest standout is not expected to prioritise money when making his next move.

“But that’s not my understanding with Elliot Anderson. He’s the kind of character that will make his next decision based on project, not finances,” the journalist said.

Jacobs continued by outlining the competition United could encounter, noting that Newcastle could join the race if they lose Sandro Tonali.

“Or Chelsea or Manchester City. Or even Newcastle if Sandro Tonali leaves and Bayern Munich are there as well. So it will be a big competition.”

Newcastle’s chances seem slim given their current financial limitations and lower standing compared to other interested clubs.

If Manchester United do pursue Tonali as some reports suggest, it could free up funds for an Anderson deal, though there is an argument the Red Devils may need both players of that quality.

Manchester United need to move quickly on Anderson deal

Anderson is expected to be one of the Premier League’s most talked-about names heading into the transfer window, much like Matheus Cunha was last summer.

United must avoid letting the transfer negotiations extend into the summer and beyond the World Cup, as strong performances by the player could draw interest from major clubs like PSG and Real Madrid.

Ineos should be looking to finalise the deal now so that United can announce the English midfielder by 1 June and put one of their biggest tasks of the summer behind them early.

If Anderson decides to go elsewhere, United cannot afford to wait around. They will need to pivot quickly and start focusing on other options straight away.
