Emma Raducanu has been knocked out of Indian Wells, beaten in convincing fashion by Amanda Anisimova last Sunday.
While few expected her to win this match, the one-sided 6-1, 6-1 defeat showed just how much work she has to do to close the gap on the game’s top players.
She heads to Miami needing to defend a significant number of ranking points and hoping she can rediscover the form that took her to the quarter-finals in 2025.
Anisimova was understandably pleased with her performance when she spoke courtside following her victory over Raducanu.
Raducanu, on the other hand, appeared downcast.

After the match, the British star spoke to Sky Sports and admitted that she was unable to play her game, overwhelmed by Anisimova’s power and intensity.
Raducanu explained: “I think in the second round today against Amanda, it was difficult to do that or even kind of come close to putting my kind of stamp on the match.
“And I think also that goes with playing Amanda, she’s that type of opponent who likes to put her stamp on it first, and that was very evident today.
“So, yeah, obviously you have to take some positives. The first match here was better than a lot of the matches I’ve been playing recently, but a match like that is never easy to take afterwards.”
Before this tournament started, the 23-year-old said she was not planning on hiring a new long-term coach. However, if results do not pick up soon, it will be interesting to see if she reconsiders.
What is next for Emma Raducanu after Indian Wells loss?
In the same interview, Raducanu was asked about how she felt and what she would take away from her two matches at Indian Wells.
“Yeah, I think I had a great first match and was in a much better place with my game. I think playing Amanda today it was very difficult to take a lot other than starting point from the match,” she began by saying.
“I think she served well and returned and her ball speed was really strong, so I couldn’t really get into the rally I felt. So I think she did that really well and the ball just felt very quick to do anything off of and to try and kind of last in surviving the point was very difficult.
“So credit to her, she played a really good match there.”
While Raducanu will likely see a drop in her WTA world ranking as other players advance, her performance did mark a slight improvement on last year’s first-round exit.
