KUALA LUMPUR - Emotions ran high at the Umno General Assembly when Umno Chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruddin delivered a tribute to the imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, visibly moving the audience.

The assembly hall was stirred following a spirited speech by Umno Vice President Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, who spoke passionately about the party's ongoing efforts to secure Najib's release.

The atmosphere intensified as a video tribute began to play, featuring song "Selapis Kasih, Sedulang Rindu" by Ramli Sarip, evoking memories of Najib’s time in office, as Umno president and his contributions to the nation.

The emotional peak was reached when a clip of Najib himself appeared, in which he spoke about the current Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, reminding the delegates of their shared past and the trials they have faced together.

Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million, beginning his sentence on Aug 23, 2022.

In February, the Federal Territories Pardons Board decided to reduce his prison term to six years.

Najib could be released as early as August 23, 2028, if he pays the reduced fine of RM50 million by then. If he does not meet this requirement, his release could be delayed until Aug 23, 2029.

Earlier, Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the party will never stop seeking justice for the former prime minister, emphasising that they have not failed but instead simply have not yet succeeded.
