Kota Kinabalu: Two employers were each fined by the Sessions Court here for employing foreign workers without valid travel documents.
The court imposed a fine of RM10,000 or six months’ jail for each undocumented foreign worker employed.
One employer was fined RM10,000 for employing one foreign worker without a valid travel document, while another was fined RM30,000 for employing three undocumented foreign workers.
Both pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 55B(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. The section provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000, or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, for each worker employed upon conviction.
In separate cases, a man and a woman were each fined RM5,000 or jailed three months for allowing undocumented migrants to remain at premises under their control.
The man was fined RM10,000 for two undocumented migrants, while the woman was fined RM5,000 for one.
The offences were charged under Section 55E(1) of the same Act, which provides for imprisonment of up to one year, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
All the offences were committed in areas around Kota Kinabalu and Keningau during separate operations conducted by the authorities.
Immigration Department Prosecuting Officer Mohd Sharifuddin Salim appeared for the prosecution, while the accused were unrepresented.
