OVER time, creativity has evolved beyond a form of expression and identity to become an economic opportunity for many.

In Malaysia, where creativity is deeply rooted in our diverse cultures and traditions, a new generation of creators is finding ways to turn their skills and ideas into commercial opportunities across design, arts and crafts, personalised creations and other creative pursuits.

This growing economic significance is reflected in Malaysia’s cultural and creative industry, which contributed 6.8 per cent to the nation’s GDP in 2024 and recorded 7.1 per cent growth from the previous year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Within the sector, books and press accounted for 9.5 per cent of gross value added, while visual arts and crafts contributed 6.6 per cent, demonstrating how creative activities are translating into tangible economic value.

Opportunities for commercialisation, from ‘passion to business’

This growing economic potential is also creating opportunities for more Malaysians to turn creative pursuits into businesses, yet for emerging creators looking to commercialise original designs, personalised gifts, merchandise or craft products, bringing an idea to market is not always straightforward.

Customisation can provide creators with greater room to explore their creativity and develop more distinctive offerings, but turning these ideas into finished products can introduce practical production challenges. Production often requires outsourcing, which can be less practical for small businesses that need smaller quantities to test new ideas, experiment with different designs or fulfil customised orders.

The need to manage production costs and turnaround times, while maintaining the quality, consistency and creative freedom that differentiate their products, can therefore become a significant barrier to growth. What these businesses increasingly need are accessible solutions that allow them to produce efficiently at a scale that suits their needs, while retaining the flexibility to explore, customise and respond quickly to different creative and customer requirements.

Empowering entrepreneurs with ‘Print and Cut solution’

Understanding these challenges, Print and Cut presents a practical way to make small-scale production more accessible, flexible and commercially viable, while giving creators greater freedom to explore customisation. The process allows creators to develop their own designs, print them according to their intended application and cut them to the desired shape, creating greater possibilities for customisation without the commitment of large production runs.

Recognising this potential, Canon Malaysia has partnered with Siser Asia to bring together their respective strengths in printing and cutting. By combining Canon’s GX business printer, featuring a high-quality full pigment ink system that delivers vibrant, water-resistant prints, with the Siser Juliet Cutter’s precise high-definition cutting capabilities, creators can achieve exceptional durability, accuracy and consistency in every project, even when producing at a smaller scale.

This opens up possibilities across personalised merchandise, customised stickers and labels, apparel, craft projects and small-batch creations, giving creative entrepreneurs greater scope to experiment, develop distinctive offerings and turn a wider range of ideas into commercial opportunities.

Supporting the growth of Malaysia’s creative sector

As Malaysia looks to further strengthen its cultural and creative economy, the rise of creative entrepreneurship presents an opportunity to broaden participation in the sector and cultivate a stronger pipeline of homegrown creative businesses. Sustaining this momentum will require an ecosystem that continues to encourage innovation, capability building and collaboration as new commercial opportunities emerge.

For Canon Malaysia, supporting this progress reflects our corporate philosophy of “Kyosei”, which centres on living and working together for the common good and underscores the role businesses can play in contributing to the communities and industries they serve.

Through continued print innovation and industry partnership, we remain committed to empowering more creative entrepreneurs to pursue their passion and turn creativity into opportunity, helping to build the momentum that will drive the continued growth of Malaysia’s creative sector.
