Kota Kinabalu: The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be an added value in empowering Sabah’s halal industry.

State Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, said the cooperation between the two large organisations, namely Muis in the field of sharia and UMS, an expert and intellectual in point of view, especially in relation to halal nutrition.

“The three things that will be emphasised are Research and Development (R&D), training and assistance to small entrepreneurs.

“It is also part of the effort and core to support Muis Halal Hub from the point of R&D, module development and continuous collaboration from UMS experts.

Meanwhile, UMS Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur, said that the existence of this collaboration is good whereby it can widely spread the knowledge and professional training related to halal, especially among the food industry in Sabah.

“In addition, it is to increase the visibility of UMS as well as the transfer of knowledge from experts related to sharia, halal science and food science in developing and empowering the halal industry in Malaysia, especially in Sabah.

Muis was represented by its President, Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin and Chief Executive Officer, Ramlan Awang Ali while UMS was represented by Dr Kasim and Registrar, Luqman Ridha Anwar.

Also present were the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister (Religious Affairs), Datuk Ruslan Muharam and the Chairman of Sabah State Baitulmal Corporation (PBNS), Datuk Dr Omar Raisul As-Salam Syah Sulaiman Omar.
