Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, has revealed that the Legal Affairs Division has taken a significant step in advancing digital safety legislation with the preparation of a working draft for the Digital Safety Bill 2023. The initiative aligns with the vision set forth by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, reflecting a proactive approach to address emerging challenges in the digital landscape.

During the Working Committee Meeting on the Drafting of New Laws Related to Cybercrime No. 2/2024, co-chaired by Azalina and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil at the Parliament building, the minister emphasized the draft's role as a foundational framework. This draft is intended to catalyze the swift development of the Digital Safety Bill, underscoring the urgency of creating specific procedural legislation to confront present and potential challenges arising from technological advancements.

Speaking about the significance of this endeavor, Azalina stressed the need to address evolving challenges, especially in the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Acknowledging the continuous progression of AI, she urged proactive measures to anticipate and effectively manage the implications of technological advancements.

The meeting, attended by key officials including Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran, highlighted the collaborative efforts across ministries to tackle the multifaceted issues related to cybercrime.

Azalina, in a statement shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), underscored the importance of staying ahead in the realm of digital safety. She recognized the need for a comprehensive legislative framework that can adapt to the evolving nature of cyber threats and technological innovations.

The preparation of the Digital Safety Bill 2023 aligns with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's commitment to fortify the nation's cybersecurity apparatus. Anwar, in a statement made on June 15 last year, announced the National Cyber Security Committee's decision to expedite the formulation of the Cyber Security Bill. This move aims to ensure the expeditious finalization of all relevant aspects of legislation pertinent to cybersecurity.

As the nation anticipates the unveiling of the Digital Safety Bill 2023, this proactive approach by the Legal Affairs Division signifies a pivotal stride towards establishing a robust legal framework that can effectively navigate the complexities of cyber threats and technological advancements in the digital age. The collaborative efforts of various government bodies reinforce the commitment to ensuring a secure and resilient digital environment for the nation.
