England star blames World Cup duty after being hit with court bill for speeding offence

  • Footballer John Stones has been convicted of speeding and ordered to pay a court bill of £1,052 alongside receiving four penalty points after missing a police notice while away on international duty.
  • The 32-year-old defender was clocked driving his £150,000 Range Rover at 43mph in a 30mph zone near his Cheshire mansion on 8 May, during Manchester City's title race run-in.
  • Stones explained to Warrington Magistrates Court that he missed the follow-up letter offering a fixed penalty because he was away with the England squad for the World Cup until July before going on holiday and completing a move to Inter Milan.
  • In his written statement to the court, Stones noted he had initially admitted to being the driver on 28 May, but left his home unoccupied for nearly four months, leading to the court notice being discovered by chance.
  • Prosecuted through the Single Justice Procedure, the magistrate sentenced Stones in his absence, handing him four penalty points, a £666 fine, £120 in court costs, and a £266 victim surcharge.
