- England will hand a Test debut to Somerset's James Rew as wicketkeeper for the second match against New Zealand, replacing Jamie Smith who is with his partner following the birth of their second child.
- Rew's inclusion means he is one of three new faces in the unfamiliar home XI, alongside fast bowler Sonny Baker and batter Jordan Cox, marking a total of five alterations from the side that won the first Test at Lord's.
- The changes also see Jofra Archer and Matt Fisher enter the squad, while captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were not considered for selection after breaching team curfew during victory celebrations.
- At 22, Rew becomes the 20th player to debut under head coach Brendon McCullum, having previously been earmarked for international honours and becoming the youngest Englishman to reach 10 first-class centuries since 1939.
- Rew, who has 64 first-class appearances and an average of 41.71, underwent extensive training with World Cup-winning former England keeper Sarah Taylor, who is part of an expanded backroom team this summer.
