England v Norway LIVE: Three Lions handed double fitness boost on Guehi and Rice before World Cup quarter-final

England are gearing up for their World Cup quarter-final against Norway tonight after positive news regarding two potential fitness doubts of Marc Guehi and Declan Rice.

Thomas Tuchel looked set to be forced to rejig his defence, making changes to the side that fended off co-hosts Mexico on enemy soil in one of England’s all-time great World Cup performances last time out. Guehi has been nursing a hamstring strain picked up at the Estadio Azteca, while Rice – who has had his own injury issues of late – was kept away from the squad with illness amid fears a bug could spread – but both returned to training on Friday and could be set to feature.

Tuchel was already facing selection headaches with Jarell Quansah ruled out of the last-eight clash after receiving a two-match ban for his red card against Mexico. Any potential defensive disruption would be far from ideal against Erling Haaland and co. – Norway knocked out Brazil in their last outing, and are rowing along a wave of positivity at this tournament.

Alan Shearer: Erling Haaland is the best No 9 in the world

18:00 , Jack Rathborn

“I think in terms of a nine, yes Haaland is the best striker in the world,” Shearer told Betfair. “All the big hitters who are at the top of the scoring charts, they're all forwards, but they're all very different. But what I would say with Haaland is, he's probably the most out and out number nine, best in the world. Because Harry Kane's not an out and out number nine, and Mbappé's not an out and out number nine, Messi's not an out number nine. But as a number nine, as an old traditional forward as we know it, then yes, he is currently the best.

“He's very different. He's not that bothered about it or it doesn't affect him if he's not involved in the game or he's not having any touches. But he could go 89 minutes without having a touch and he could just have that killer finish and that's what he loves and that's what he enjoys.”

Harry Kane reveals thoughts on Norway star Erling Haaland before World Cup clash

17:30 , Jack Rathborn

“First of all, I think we are completely different players almost. I know we are both seen as strikers, but it is almost two different positions if I’m totally honest.

“Erling has been incredible, his goalscoring record. Physically, he’s a machine, he’s a beast. His finishing is at the highest level and obviously his goalscoring record speaks for itself.

“I see myself as a different player although I score the same goals. I like to maybe touch the ball a little bit more, be involved in play a little bit more but also can play as an out-and-out nine.

“I don’t think it is one to compare ourselves. I respect him a lot as a player and a fellow professional, obviously hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow.

“His overall performances over these recent years speak for themselves. He’s a fantastic player.”

Nico O'Reilly refuses to believe Erling Haaland is the only problem between England and victory

17:15 , Jack Rathborn

"No, not at all," O'Reilly said when asked whether keeping Haaland ‌quiet would effectively win England the game.

"They've got great players all around the pitch who can cause a lot of danger. But of course, if we can keep him quiet, it would be a huge factor."

"But right now, I'm feeling great and I'm ready to go."

Alan Shearer on how England can stop Haaland

16:45 , Jack Rathborn

“That's the big question on Saturday; how do we nullify Haaland. I mean, Haaland to Norway is what Kane is to England. So, they'll be asking the same question. How did they stop Harry Kane? Because they'll feel if they stop him, they've got a much better chance of winning and vice versa with Haaland. It's easier said than done. I used to go into games myself and I know that everyone was looking for me to score the goals, and I enjoyed that and I really embraced it. And these two will as well,” Shearer told Betfair.

“You’ve got to hope that he has an off day because there's not many players that can handle him. You've got to try and stop crosses going into the box, try and stop him at source, which means getting the ball into him. So, it's not just the centre halves that have got to stop him, but the other players have got to stop the ball going into him.”

The next Messi vs Ronaldo?

16:30 , Will Castle

England defender Ezri Konsa believes Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland could cement a Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi-like rivalry over the next two decades.

Asked by ITV if they might eventually mimic the profile of Ronaldo and Messi’s storied rivalry, Konsa replied: “It very well could be. You’ve got Neymar coming up as well, who is another top, top, top player, so in 15 years’ time, I’ll probably be sitting on my sofa watching Haaland or Jude being one of the two GOATs (greatest of all time) of world football.”

Thomas Tuchel explains why England need to take another big step

16:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Thomas Tuchel is ready to take another big step as England look to overcome heat, humidity and Erling Haaland in their crunch World Cup quarter-final clash against Norway.

After digging deep to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo and co-hosts Mexico, the back-to-back European Championship finalists are just three wins away from immortality.

England take on Brazil’s conquerors Norway in the Miami heat at Hard Rock Stadium seeking progress to Wednesday’s semi-final against holders Argentina or surprise package Switzerland.

Tuchel’s men arrived in Florida buoyed by last weekend’s unforgettable 3-2 triumph at the electric Estadio Azteca, but the head coach is only interested in tackling the next challenge.

“I think we took a big step in our last match, but it was only a step,” the England boss said. “We’re still hungry, we still have dreams, and we still have a big goal to play for.

“The next step is to win the quarter-final. It’s important to look up front. We left this match behind.

“We take the positive things and the belief with us, but everything that matters is ahead of us.”

David Beckham visits England ahead of quarter-final

15:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Harry Kane says England are hoping to do Sir David Beckham proud after the former captain spoke to the players on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final with Norway.

Beckham visited Thomas Tuchel’s men as they stepped up preparations for the crunch clash with Erling Haaland and Co in Miami on Saturday.

They trained on Friday afternoon at the facilities of Inter Miami – the Major League Soccer side co-owned by Beckham.

The 51-year-old star was in attendance for the session in Fort Lauderdale, alongside sons Romeo and Cruz, and spoke to players in the gym before they took to the field, having been at a number of their World Cup matches this summer.

Kane revealed Beckham, who won 115 caps for his country, wished the team luck as they try to reach just a third World Cup semi-final in 60 years.

The Bayern Munich striker said: “He just wished us luck. After most games, he messages me, and we stay in touch.

“He’s a big England fan. We all know how much it meant for him to represent England and be captain and play the way he did every time he wore the shirt, so he was there to support us.

“Obviously, we were using his home, the home that he built, so we appreciate him doing that for us.

“It was good to catch up with him, and for some of the other lads to have a chat with him. He’s an England legend.

“He was wishing us well and hopefully we can do him proud tomorrow.”

O'Reilly dismisses Haaland's 'mind games'

13:50 , Will Castle

Nico O’Reilly knows Erling Haaland is playing mind games by saying England are “clear favourites” to win their World Cup quarter-final with Norway.

Asked about the striker’s comments, he said: “Yeah, mind games.

“But they’re a good team as well. They’ve showed that throughout the whole tournament.

“It’s not just certain players that we need to worry about. They’re good collectively, and it’s going to be a good game.

”Erling’s Erling. We all know what he’s like. He can score goals. He’s dangerous in the box, and he’s a real threat. But they need to get him the ball in first. A lot goes into it.

“I think keeping Erling quiet gives us a real chance to win the game.

“We know the threat he can cause – unbelievable striker, world class and he showed that throughout the tournament, scoring every game he’s played in.”

Intruder with wrench causes chaos in England media centre

13:40 , PA

The Football Association will review an incident at England’s Kansas City media centre after a man walked in carrying a wrench.

England trained on Thursday lunchtime at Swope Soccer Village, which is around half a mile from their media centre, hosted in a community building.

The session meant no member of the England player or coaching staff was on the scene when a man, who appeared in distress, entered the media centre carrying a wrench later that same day.

The individual was ushered out of the room and dealt with by local police, with the FA now set to review the incident.

Erling Haaland is Norway’s humble hero – and England might not be able to stop him

13:20 , Miguel Delaney in Miami

There have been a few times at Norway’s World Cup base in North Carolina when Erling Haaland has noticed kids playing football nearby, often in a World Cup shirt or a club like Manchester City. In other words, they’d know who he was, they just didn’t know he was there.

Haaland would then kick a ball back, to the absolute delight of the children. Some joked they still showed better awareness than Gabriel, beaten in the air by his Premier League rival for the opener against Brazil.

The two scenes sum up Haaland’s World Cup so far. Off the pitch, a childlike joy. On it, a shark-like seriousness.

‘Unbelievable support!’: The inside story of the viral Harry Kane interview, told by presenter Kelly Somers

13:10 , Jessie Thompson

Sunday night in the UK. A nation goes to bed with bated breath (unless, that it is, you decided to stay up). England would play Mexico in the third round of the World Cup at 1am UK time (or 2am, as it turned out, thanks to a weather delay prolonging the agony).

Let’s be honest, we’d not been playing brilliantly. The match against DR Congo was a major scare. Then there was the formidable atmosphere at Mexico’s Azteca Stadium, which some feared might just blow us all away. And what about the altitude? Everyone was saying it would turn the players’ legs into lead.

But the nation woke up in delirium. We’d actually done it! The England men’s team had delivered an absolute all-timer, and we hadn’t even had to go to extra time or penalties. Could it get better? It could. As we were brewing our morning coffees, we watched BBC presenter Kelly Somers have a word with the captain.

Quickly, it became apparent that belting out “Wonderwall” with the fans had left Harry Kane almost completely hoarse. “We had to fight!” he squeaked as he explained England’s gameplan to Somers. The pair dissolved into giggles as they delivered TV gold. Kane, our national saviour, our sweet angel, seemed to have no idea what sound – if any – was going to come out of his mouth next, understanding his fate as a meme in real time.

On the latest edition of our World Cup podcast, Lawrence Ostlere is joined by Miguel Delaney, Richard Jolly and Kieran Jackson to react to France’s 2-0 win over Morocco, with Kylian Mbappé central again to an imperious performance. After looking ahead to Friday's quarter final of Spain vs Belgium, they preview England v Norway in the Miami heat and humidity, debating Tuchel’s selection—especially John Stones and Reece James—how to limit Erling Haaland, and whether England could realistically hope to beat France or Spain in a final should they get that far, before giving score predictions.

Miami Heat

No, not the NBA team – one of the biggest talking points before the tournament was how England would have to cope in the heat, but they have played five games where it has not been an issue.

They played indoors twice and then had inclement weather in Boston, New York and Mexico City.

While they have been training in searing conditions in Kansas City, they now return to the tropical heat of Florida, where temperatures will feel above 40 degrees Celsius.

Stolbakken: Quarter-final is not Kane vs Haaladn

12:40 , Will Castle

Norway boss Stale Solbakken maintains the World Cup quarter-final with England in Miami is not just going to be a straight shoot-out between Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

“I think it’s Norway versus England, but I don’t think it is a secret that Kane is the match-winner number one for England and Haaland is match-winner number one for us,” Solbakken said at a press conference.

On Haaland’s mindset, whether he was “hungry for goals”, Solbakken added: “To be honest, that hunger is not that big when training. When he trains, when he participates, he is hungry for goals, but on a couple of those training sessions, he hasn’t been all that hungry. I have to be honest.”

England assistant says it is time for Tuchel's team to 'take the handbrake off'

12:10 , Will Castle

Assistant manager Anthony Barry says it is time for England to take the handbrake off as Thomas Tuchel’s side head into the World Cup clash against Norway with a full tank and their foot on the gas.

Argentina or Switzerland await the victor on Wednesday in Atlanta, where England started the knockouts by surviving a scare in the 2-1 comeback win against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tuchel’s side then overcame hostility, altitude and a red card to beat co-hosts Mexico in Sunday’s 3-2 last-16 thriller and there is belief that the best it yet to come.

“We believe that the petrol tank is full, the foot is on the gas, and now maybe we just need to take the handbrake off,” England assistant Barry told talkSPORT.

“Sometimes that can happen with the opponents that we’re facing, sometimes maybe that will happen when they really see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“There’s only 11 days left and now is the time to take the handbrake off and go all in.

“We think that the public and everyone has seen so many good faces of this team, but we still believe there’s some left to show.

“And if they click, if they become coherent and be able to find a cohesive performance that we think they’re capable of, then it could be pretty exciting to watch.”

Erling Haaland puts pressure on England ahead of quarter-final

11:30 , Will Castle

Norway striker Erling Haaland has told the media they “should put every single pressure on the English lads” ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final with England.

Haaland has spearheaded Norway’s first run to the last eight of the global tournament, scoring seven goals in five appearances as he has proved himself on the biggest stage.

The Manchester City striker, who was born in Leeds, will come up against some familiar faces in what he calls a “special game”, but he was keen to put all the pressure on Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Asked how he rated Norway’s chances of winning the World Cup, Haaland told reporters in Miami: “Still really low.

“I think there’s some clear favourites out there, England’s one of them. I think all of you should put every single pressure on the English lads.”

This World Cup has been notable for its bizarre and extreme weather disruptions, and tonight’s clash with Norway will not be exempt.

A Saharan dust storm has hit Miami, giving the city hazy skies, vivid sunsets and a temporary dip in air quality. This can aggravate conditions such as asthma - something England striker Ollie Watkins lives with.

Why was Jarell Quansah banned for two World Cup matches by Fifa?

Jarell Quansah has been banned for two games by Fifa for his red card in England’s last-16 win over Mexico.

Quansah was sent off after VAR review following a reckless sliding challenge which saw his studs go into the shin of Jesus Gallardo.

England were considering appealing the decision after Fifa suspended USA striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban, something that was lobbied for by US president Donald Trump in a hugely controversial move.

However, England have now discovered that Quansah’s suspension has been doubled to two matches instead of one after Fifa found him in breach of Article 14 of their code of conduct, which states a player would get a two-game ban for serious foul play.

Heat, humidity and Haaland: Why Norway can upset England in World Cup quarter-final

10:00 , Miguel Delaney in Miami

As the England squad reached a sweltering Miami, there were naturally a few wondering whether it was better to not play Brazil in this weather. It is set to “feel like” 45 degrees on Saturday, due to humidity that can rise to 80 per cent, which means it’s probably preferable to face a country partly based in the Arctic Circle.

Thomas Tuchel and his staff, however, would instantly caution against such thinking – not least because Norway are likely a better team than Brazil. Given how much the England manager has talked about “brotherhood”, Tuchel enthuses about the spirit in the Norwegian camp.

The win over Mexico illustrates how England are developing an emotional momentum of their own, with the post-game ritual of “Wonderwall” now forming their own version of Norway’s viking row.

England sweating over fitness concerns

The defensive injury crisis isn’t exactly disappearing for Thomas Tuchel.

England are concerned particularly over the fitness of Marc Guehi, who has a slight hamstring strain that is worrying regardless before a meeting with club colleague Erling Haaland.

Declan Rice, too, has been kept away from the rest of the squad as he deals with an illness amid fears of it spreading.

Both did return to training on Friday but their involvement may still be up in the air.

Another big question surrounds whether Reece James is fit to return at right back as he continues to battle a hamstring issue.

Should he be unavailable, Tuchel must decide whether to use Ezri Konsa there or star Djed Spence on his weaker side.

Jordan Henderson is out because of the freak arm injury sustained when celebrating in Mexico.

Norway vs England LIVE!

09:00 , Will Castle

England are raring to carry momentum from Mexico City into their World Cup quarter-final against Norway tonight but have been rocked by a potential double fitness blow with Marc Guehi and Declan Rice both reported to be doubts.

Thomas Tuchel looks set to be forced to rejig his defence, making changes to the side that fended off co-hosts Mexico on enemy soil in one of England’s all-time great World Cup performances last time out.

Guehi has missed training this week as he nurses a hamstring strain picked up at the Estadio Azteca, while Rice – who has had his own injury issues of late – has been kept away from the squad with illness amid fears a bug could spread. It adds to Tuchel’s defensive selection headaches with Jarell Quansah already ruled out of the last-eight clash after receiving a two-match ban for his red card against Mexico.

The disruption comes with England gearing up for a meeting with a Norwegian side that knocked out Brazil in their last outing, and rowing along a wave of positivity at this tournament. Star striker Erling Haaland is in red-hot form and has declared the pressure firmly on Tuchel’s team – and may fancy his chances of exploiting a remodelled backline.
