England reached the semi-finals of Euro 2025 after a thrilling quarter-final against Sweden with Lucy Bronze scoring the decisive spot kick in a penalty shootout.

The Lionesses began the match in the worst possible way as Kosovare Asllani sent Sweden ahead inside the opening two minutes before Stina Blackstenius doubled their lead in the first half as Sarina Wiegman’s side were punished for their defensive sloppiness.

Changes were made by the coach and the introduction of Chloe Kelly was the turning point with the Arsenal forward providing two assists as Bronze and Michelle Agyemang, another substitute, score late in the game to force extra-time and penalties.

The shootout was low on quality with both goalkeepers on top form. Bronze rattled one down the middle to put England ahead at 3-2 and Hannah Hampton’s heroics ensured England’s title defence goes on.

Who and when do England play next? Route to Women’s Euro 2025 final

England have successfully reached the semi-finals of Euro 2025 after surviving a penalty shoot-out against Sweden and coming from two goals down to continue their title defence.

The holders looked to be heading home but two goals in three minutes sparked a chaotic comeback before Hannah Hampton and Lucy Bronze were the heroes in the shoot-out.

After going through on penalties, England will play Italy in the semi-finals.

Italy were runners-up in Group B after beating Belgium, drawing with Portugal and losing to Spain, and stunned Norway in their quarter-final. Cristiana Girelli scored twice to send Italy through to their first semi-final in 28 years.

Their semi-final will be played on Tuesday 22 July with kick-off at 8pm BST (UK time). England will travel to Geneva for the first time, which is where Italy beat Norway on Wednesday night.

Beth Mead reacts to 'emotional' England victory

Jamie Braidwood

“I was quite emotional at the end of the game. I think I was frustrated not to execute my own penalty. I just said over there, I think I would back myself in them situations but we practice them every day. We try and do our routine. It doesn't go to plan, but we as a team stuck together, we got behind each other and like Ella said earlier, sometimes you need your goalkeeper to step up and Hannah did that today.”

Sarina Wiegman praises England's fight to get through

Jamie Braidwood

Sarina Wiegman admitted there were “three times” where she thought England were heading out of Euro 2025 before winning on penalties.

“What we can control is the team just fighting to get back into the game and that is what you can see. I think that’s a quality that is so strong in this team, that togetherness and fighting back. It shows so much resilience.

“Then we changed it and brought in other players like Michelle [Agyemang], Chloe [Kelly] and they brought different things to the game that really helped the team in that moment. Also, Sweden in that moment, had to adapt to some different things.

“That is so powerful from this team. That luck as well, yes, at least three times I thought we were out.”

Sarina Wiegman on Lucy Bronze:

01:00

,

Jamie Braidwood

Sarina Wiegman reserved special praise for Lucy Bronze’s “resilience and fight” and said she had never before seen a player defy injury to score such an important penalty.

“Lucy Bronze is just one of a kind, I have never, ever seen this before in my life,” Wiegman said.

“I’m a very lucky person that I’ve worked with so many incredible people and incredible football players, and there are so, so many, but what she does and her mentality, and how she did that penalty and the goal, at the far post, she gets it in the net. But that’s not what defines her.

“What defines her is that resilience, that fight. I think the only way to get her off the pitch is in a wheelchair.”

Sarina Wiegman confirms major injury concern after Leah Williamson limps off England win

Friday 18 July 2025 00:45

,

Jamie Braidwood

Sarina Wiegman confirmed that captain Leah Williamson rolled her ankle during England’s chaotic Euro 2025 win over Sweden and said the defender will be assessed before the semi-final against Italy on Tuesday.

The Lionesses fought from two goals down and then survived a thrilling penalty shoot-out to keep their European title defence alive in Zurich but Wiegman may be left counting the cost of the victory after Williamson limped off in extra time.

The centre-back stayed down after England cleared a corner and appeared to land awkwardly. Williamson attempted to play but realised she was not at “100 per cent” and was replaced before the penalty drama unfolded.

England 'won't take anything for granted' - Lucy Bronze

Flo Clifford

Italy next, and Lucy Bronze says, “Obviously on paper they're ranked lower than us but for them they've got everything to win in that game, considering I think it's their first ever Euros semi-final. You saw how much it meant to them yesterday getting through.

“Even against Spain I thought they did quite well, although the scoreline probably doesn't look like it, and Spain are a top team. I've watched them throughout the tournament and they deserve to be in the semi-final. I don't think we'll take anything for granted after this game tonight so we have to be at our best if we want to be in the final.”

Hannah Hampton praises England supporters for providing ‘little edge’ during penalty heroics

Friday 18 July 2025 00:30

Flo Clifford

Lucy Bronze was England’s matchwinner as their tense and crucial Euro 2025 quarter-final went to a penalty shootout against Sweden.

Bronze, up seventh in the line-up, drilled her spot kick down the middle before Smilla Holmberg fired her penalty over the crossbar to give England a 3-2 shootout win.

Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two penalties to keep the Lionesses in the contest and praised the England supporters for giving her an extra edge in the shootout.

Hampton, who performed her heroics with a bloody nose, spoke to the BBC after the match and said she was ‘relieved’ to make it through.

Chloe Kelly brings magic and sheer chaos as England abandon all logic

Friday 18 July 2025 00:20

,

Flo Clifford

Chloe Kelly walks up to the penalty spot as if she’s in her back garden. She stops. She waits. She picks the ball up and spins it back onto the spot, as if no one is watching and no one is waiting for the kick to keep England’s Euro defence alive. Kelly waits a little longer. Then she lifts up her right leg, skips a little, and effortlessly places the biggest penalty of her life into the corner. Confident? That doesn’t quite cut it. Did Kelly know that Sweden’s goalkeeper was up next, with the chance to knock England out and send Sweden through? Probably not. But given the way Kelly turned and roared at the England fans in Zurich, you wouldn’t put it past her.

England’s gritty resolve overshadows familiar frailties in Euro 2025 penalty shootout triumph

Friday 18 July 2025 00:10

,

Miguel Delaney

It’s an image that could go down in England folklore, albeit after a performance - bar maybe a total of three minutes - that won’t quite be written into history. Certainly not with any great affection. Following a series of absurd misses, in what might well have been one of the worst penalty shoot-outs in football history, a hobbling Lucy Bronze ripped off her strapping, and strode forward. An astonishing eight of the 12 previous penalties had been squandered. Some had been squandered in scarcely believable fashion, the emotional momentum of the shoot-out veering as wildly as some of the attempts. So, Bronze just smashed it straight into the roof of the net.

It was a decisiveness that had been missing from the previous 10 minutes, and most of the game. It also seemed to scramble Sweden one final time, as Smilla Holmberg became just the latest player to sky the ball.

This time, it was enough. Bronze’s force had driven England into the semi-finals of Euro 2025.

'The little things make a difference' - Lucy Bronze

Friday 18 July 2025 00:00

,

Flo Clifford

Lucy Bronze adds, referring to penalties and the tape she put on her leg in extra time: “I actually hurt my leg a little bit in the game, which is why I had to take the tape off, so I kind of changed my mind. That’s why I took it off because I thought I'm not sure if I'm going to hurt myself doing something different.

“Also I watched the goalkeeper in every single penalty and she dived quite early. Statistically in a penalty shootout it's quite risky for the goalkeeper to stand still and go down the middle. Also you’re more likely to win if you go first - winning the coin toss played into that. So yeah - I love maths.

“I've been around long enough. I need to know the ins and outs of the game. Standing a little bit in front, celebrating each goal, giving confidence to my team. All the little things can make a difference and for me it felt like it did tonight.”

'A rollercoaster' - Lucy Bronze

Thursday 17 July 2025 23:50

,

Flo Clifford

Lucy Bronze is next up. “Just a rollercoaster, both overwhelming, underwhelming at the same time,” she says. “Just a crazy game as an England player and I can imagine for the fans watching as well. I saw my brother right at the end, he was so excited, we probably put him through it, surprised he didn’t faint during the game.”

How hard was it to keep going? “Holding the team together in the first half was difficult. There was a few good chances they had which could have put the game to bed. Lucky for us we kept them out, Hannah did a couple of good saves, once we made our substitutes that’s when the momentum really came to us, got our two goals, changed the dynamic of the game.”

When she scored she kicked the advertising hoarding - is she okay? “My foot’s fine, I’m made of tough stuff. It was just frustration of how are we actually going to get the ball into the back of the net. Seeing it go in, a lot of emotion just came out in that one second.”

Wiegman heaps praise on Agyemang and Hampton

Thursday 17 July 2025 23:41

,

Flo Clifford

Asked about the impact of Michelle Agyemang, who scored the equaliser, Wiegman says: “This is basically why we selected her. Michelle hasnt’ been in our environment for a long period of time but the moment she came in, she did really well, and she brings something different. She showed that in training, against Belgium, against France. She’s so strong and she scored a goal too, she has shown she can do that.”

On Hannah Hampton - did she silence the doubters? “She didn’t have doubters in our bubble. I think she had a very impressive performance, some very good saves in the second half, one save was really important. She had one penalty, the right side, that was an incredible save. Pretty big contribution today.”

Is she turning her attention to playing Italy yet? “No, not yet. At the moment I’m just thinking how this team turned this around again, how this team showed resilience, tonight we showed we’re absolutely never done.”

Glass of wine to celebrate? “A glass of something nice, I think so, just one because we need to get prepared for Italy!”

'I need to decompress' - Sarina Wiegman

Thursday 17 July 2025 23:34

,

Flo Clifford

BBC Sport has a chat with Wiegman now. How was it to watch? “Hard. One of the hardest games I’ve ever watched, very emotional. We could have been out four or five times. Of course when you’re 2-0 down at half time it’s not good. We started really bad and then at the end of the first half got better, in the second half we got better but we didn’t create anything so had to change shape.

“Then we scored two goals so that was crazy already. Then extra time, some players injured, Hannah, blood all over the place, we go into penalty shootout, then we miss a lot but they miss even more then we’re through! I need to decompress, I think!

“We prepared [penalty takers] before the game, we know the players’ preferences. You have to know who is still on the pitch and who is still confident to take one. That went really quick because we do it with the technical staff. I think that was the easiest job today.”

'Riding the storm' - Chloe Kelly

Thursday 17 July 2025 23:26

,

Flo Clifford

Chloe Kelly talks to BBC Sport and it’s put to her that this was a stressful watch. “Tell me about it,” she says, “we were just as stressed as the fans I think. We knew that we had to bounce back, we weren’t at our best in the first half but we knew that we were capable of doing so and we showed that, the girls coming onto the pitch did their job and executed it really well. It just shows the whole squad of 23, when you’re needed you take your moment and that’s exactly what the girls did tonight.

“I didn’t feel under pressure, I just wanted to create some goals for the girls and be at my best, and that’s what I tried to do and hopefully everyone could see that. I just tried to put the ball in the box and play to my strengths.

“There’s times against a top team like Sweden when you are going to be struggling a little bit, that’s football and especially against a top side, but it’s about sticking together in those moments. Even in extra time there were moments when we felt uncomfortable but it’s it’s riding the storm together and knowing that we’ve got resilient players in our team and we can bounce back from anything. We showed that tonight.”

What did they say going into the shootout? “I think we have belief, we worked hard on the training pitch even in penalties. We have experience of playing in a penalty shooutout in the World Cup in 23, we’ve experienced that in tournament football. There’s a lot of belief within us. It didn’t go as planned but we got the job done!”

Into the semi-finals... “Let’s go!” she says.

'We don't believe that we're ever done' - Leah Williamson

Thursday 17 July 2025 23:17

,

Flo Clifford

Leah Williamson has a chat with BBC Sports. “I just feel really really proud,” the captain says. “That was awful to watch at the end but I just love that we never give up. We don’t believe that we’re ever done. The fightback, the quality to turn the game around and stay in it mentally is just incredible.

Asked how much penalty practice they did in the lead-up, she laughs and says, “Loads, and I know there were a few more misses than normal but that’s something that you have to box off before a tournament. It’s the easiest and hardest thing in the world.”

On the subs, she says, “That’s what I’m most proud of, you hope that you create an enivronment where everyone’s ready and feels valued enough that when it’s their time they can step up and do their job. Everybody covered so much ground, did their job and could help out each other as well. I’m so proud of them.

“We played three finals in a row basically in terms of if you lose, you’re going home. We have the belief, we have the proof, it’s just about turning up and doing the job. I’m a happy girl today.

And the ankle? “It wasn’t about me and a game like that requires you to be at 100%. It wasn’t the time to stay on the pitch, but I don’t know.”

'Don't ever write us off' - Hannah Hampton

Thursday 17 July 2025 23:02

,

Flo Clifford

Hannah Hampton is asked what emotions she’s feeling and says, “Right now I don’t know, it’s just all gone so quick, that last little bit in the penalty shooutout. We’re very happy obviously, you can see all the celebrations, cheering with the fans, they were behind us the whole game. Even when we were 2-0 down they knew we could bring this back and don’t ever write us off.

“Stressful watching, stressful playing in, every single time I saved one I was thinking please just put in it so we have a bit of a cushion, and their keeper just went and saved the next. I was thinking ‘oh goodness, here we go’. I thought I was better with one nostril than when I was completely fine! Just happy and relieved now.”

She adds that she’s fine after that injury scare. The nosebleeds are a common issue, she says, and the doctor was going “oh no, not again” when she required treatment.

She thanks the fans for their support in the shootout: “It helps you get that little bit of an edge over them and push a little extra in each dive.”
