England secured Euro 2025 glory after defeating world champions Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Chloe Kelly’s winning spot kick and Hannah Hampton’s saves proved decisive for the Lionesses in a gripping contest that ended 1-1 after extra-time.

The Lionesses became the first England team in history to defend a major tournament title, but did it the hard way again after suffering an early setback when Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey broke the deadlock with a superb header.

But Sarina Wiegman’s side rallied in the second half through Alessia Russo, who leaped high to bury a header after a delightful cross from substitute Kelly, on for the injured Lauren James, who had passed a late fitness test.

England survived a scare in extra-time after good play from the reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati and the world champions’ slick passing cut the Lionesses open before Salma Paralluelo missed inside the six-yard box after an audacious attempt at a backheeled finish. But Hampton and Kelly stepped up in the shootout to secure a 3-1 win.

Kelly: 'Representing England is never a given'

Kelly was rewarded with a permanent deal at Arsenal after her impressive loan spell.

"I knew that I had to get game time, and representing England is never a given. But what (Sarina) has done for the women's game, not just in England, but in the Netherlands, the whole women's game, she's taken it to another level."

Kelly: 'Thank you to everyone who wrote me off'

At the beginning of this year, Kelly was still at Manchester City, lacking playing time, and so unhappy that she took to social media to express her wish to leave the club and a situation she shared at the time had "a huge impact on not only my career but my mental wellbeing", even considering whether or not she wanted to stay in the game.

Kelly was left out of Sarina Wiegman's first squad due to a lack of minutes after securing a deadline-day loan move to Arsenal but was called up as an injury replacement in February and has enjoyed revelatory tournament, cementing herself as the most superlative of English super-subs.

"There were a lot of tears at full time," said Kelly, "Especially when I saw my family, because they are the people that got me through those dark moments and I am so grateful to be out the back end. If that's a story to tell someone who might be experiencing the same, then tough times don't last.

"Right around the corner was the Champions League final, I won that, and now a Euros final.

"So thank you to everyone who wrote me off. I'm grateful."

Chloe Kelly thanked her detractors and said England boss Sarina Wiegman "gave me hope when I didn't have any" after she fired home the winning penalty in their Euro 2025 final triumph over Spain in Switzerland.

Substitute Kelly - who scored the extra-time winner in the Euro 2022 final - cooly converted after Hannah Hampton made two spectacular saves and Salma Paralluelo missed, writing more personal history and a satisfying ending to a fairy-tale 2025, one that began with the 27-year-old doubting if she would even make this squad.

"She's amazing," said Kelly, asked about a coach who has now led teams to three consecutive European trophies.

"She is an incredible woman. What she's done for this country, we should all be so grateful. What she has done for me individually, she gave me hope when I probably didn't have any, and she gave me an opportunity to represent my country again."

Ellen White, part of the England squad that won Euro 2022, said: "This England team just epitomises resilience don't they? The mentality, the hard work, the togetherness. I want to burst into tears I'm so proud of every single one of them.

"Sarina Wiegman has won three Euros in a row, that's extraordinary, and that girl Chloe Kelly, wow, that mentality to score that winning penalty, and credit to Hannah Hampton as well."

Kelly has been at the centre of so much late drama in this tournament, and it felt fitting that she struck the winner.

And White added: "It was a ridiculous penalty with that much pressure. I love the confidence, everything about her energy. She's had an up-and-down year but she's come out on top."

Ex-captain Houghton pinpoints England mentality

Lawrence Ostlere

"Chloe Kelly has been through so much this year and to see her score that winning penalty to bring back that trophy for England is so unbelievable...

"The journey this team has been in is something I'd never ever predict. To come back from the France game, to perform against the Netherlands and Wales and then the extra-time games, to be successful you need all 23 players and the staff as well all aligned. This mentality is scary."

Ex-captain Houghton pinpoints England mentality

Former England captain Steph Houghton called the mentality of the Lionesses "scary" after they beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to retain their European title.

England have not always been at their best in this tournament, losing their opening game against France, then needing penalties to beat Sweden and extra time to see off Italy on their way to the final.

But they have repeatedly found a way as manager Sarina Wiegman made it three European titles in a row.

"It's incredible, I've no words," Houghton said on BBC Sport. "This England team never gives up. There's been times in this tournament where they've had backs to the wall but that is the mentality of being a Lioness.”

The 55-year-old, who has now won the last three Women's European Championships – previously with Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022 – said on BBC One: "I can't believe it. The word 'team' really described who we are, a team.”

We deserved more, says Spain coach Tome

Sunday 27 July 2025 22:15

Spain took a first-half lead but England equalised through Alessia Russo and battled superbly to take the game to a 1-1 draw and a shootout.

"I think we were better, but football is a sport where the best team doesn't always win.England are an excellent national team, they showed their level during the tournament. They draw, and then they defend themselves to get the penalties," Tome said.

The 42-year-old coach could not hide her disappointment that her squad had come up short of another major title.

"This is our profession. what we worked for, what they worked for deserved a different ending," she said.

"That's why today I have the feeling that we almost reached it, but it's gone. I really value all the work done -- we wrote history during the whole tournament, and the team was good," Tome added

We deserved more, says Spain coach Tome

Spain coach Montse Tome was left ruing her side's inability to take their chances as the world champions fell to a penalty shootout by England in the Women's Euros final on Sunday after they dominated a game that finished 1-1 after 120 minutes.

The Spaniards had 24 attempts on goal, but England's grit and determination dragged them to a shootout where they came up short, failing to convert three of their four spot-kicks as Chloe Kelly fired England to victory.

"I think this team deserved more. I think we worked hard for a long time to reach this moment, to reach this final against a high-level national team as an event and what we saw in the game makes me think that the team deserved it," Tome told a media conference.

"This is a sport, you must know how to lose, and today we missed the penalties."

England only had one key trait over Spain – but it led them to Euro 2025 glory

Sunday 27 July 2025 21:49

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Here’s our chief football writer, Miguel Delaney, writing from the stadium in Basel:

History repeated, once as another triumph, twice with force. Chloe Kelly again decided the European Championship for England, this time with a penalty of such ferocity that it fittingly reflected the fight and spirit of this team.

It was proper grit, proper character… Yes, proper England, who remain European champions. Sarina Wiegman’s side produced another miracle in this tournament, as she claimed a third successive winners’ medal in the competition.

These are all historic feats in themselves, but they are elevated by the manner of this glory. It went to even deeper wells of resolve than Kelly winning it in extra time at Wembley against Germany three years ago. And to manage that against this world champion Spanish side, in this way, is the best illustration of this team’s spirit. It shouldn’t really have been possible given how they went behind.

Why Beth Mead had to retake her penalty in England’s dramatic Euro 2025 shootout win over Spain

Sunday 27 July 2025 20:59

,

Chris Wilson

Beth Mead was forced to retake England’s first penalty in their dramatic Euro 2025 final shootout with Spain due to the new double-touch rule.

The second-half substitute was nominated as England’s first penalty taker, and duly fired the ball down the middle of Spain goalkeeper Catalina Coll’s goal. But Mead had clearly kicked the ball twice, hitting it against her standing foot as her boot slipped on the grass, and replays confirmed what referee Stephanie Frappart suspected.

Kicking the ball twice is not allowed from the penalty spot and previously that would have meant Mead’s goal being immediately chakled off.
