The day of destiny for England’s World Cup 2026 hopefuls is here as Thomas Tuchel prepares to unveil his 26-man squad for the tournament.
England are hoping to transform from tournament challengers into World Cup winners and end 60 years of hurt in North America this summer, and Tuchel has a number of huge decisions to make.
While much of the squad picks itself on account of club form and past work internationally, a crowded fight for attacking places could see Phil Foden’s place under real threat, while a call will also need to be made on who backs up captain Harry Kane – if specialist No 9 cover is required at all...
Defensively, Trent Alexander-Arnold feels a long shot with Tuchel signalling his preference for other right-back, while Harry Maguire has confirmed that he has missed out on a third tournament.

Pick England’s strongest player in each position ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad announcement
09:36 , Mike JonesEngland’s World Cup squad announcement is almost here – and Thomas Tuchel still has some huge decisions to make.
The England manager will reveal his 26-man squad on Friday ahead of this summer’s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico, with several positions still far from settled.
Below you’ll find two England selector games – split into defence and attack – where you can choose who should start in each key position and compare your picks with the rest of our readers.

When will England prepare for the World Cup?
09:30 , Mike JonesOnce Thomas Tuchel names his squad this morning, the World Cup preparations will begin.
England warm-up for the tournament with friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica.
They then start their World Cup campaign against Croatia on 17 June, before further group games against Ghana and Panama.
Kane targeting World Cup win
09:24 , Mike JonesHarry Kane, who will definitely be on the plane, has high hopes for the World Cup and wants to bring home the trophy.
He said: "We know how much a World Cup win would mean, not just to us, but to the fans and the country itself.
“That’s what drives us on the pitch, and hopefully we can bring it home for the fans."
England squad 'as good as ever' says Kane
09:18 , Mike Jones"I think our squad is as good as we’ve ever had. I think when you look at the starting XI, you look at the players coming off the bench, we’re going into the tournament as one of the favourites,” said Harry Kane before the rumours and leaks began last night.
“We’ve been building together as a team over the past few camps under Thomas. I think we’ve set the standard, and now we look forward to continuing this into the World Cup next month.”
No place for Alexander-Arnold
09:06 , Mike JonesPerhaps the least surprising exclusion of England’s big name stars is Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Real Madrid right-back has not been favoured by Thomas Tuchel in any of the previous camps under the German and as a result will miss out on a place in the squad according to Sky Sports.
35 players were selected for the squad in March and Alexander-Arnold missed out then so isn’t hugely surprising that Tuchel has elected to leave him out.
How to watch England's World Cup squad reveal
09:02 , Mike JonesEngland fans will be able to stream the entire World Cup squad reveal and subsequent press conference using the official England app.
To gain access, viewers need to download the application for free via Apple's App Store or Google Play and log in to their registered account.
There will be no traditional live UK TV channel broadcasting the initial reveal show, as the FA has retained exclusive rights for its own digital platform.
Richards tells Tuchel to select Foden
08:59 , Mike JonesMicah Richards believes that Phil Foden has enough ‘magic’ to deserve to be included in England’s World Cup sqaud despite rumours saying he will not be.
Speaking after Foden starred in a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace nine days ago, Richards said: “As it’s a 26-man squad, there are certain games where teams will play a low block and Foden can unlock the door.
“I know he’s not had the best of seasons. But in a World Cup, when you need something special, he can produce that.
“Tuchel likes Morgan Rogers but in terms of passing and football brain I’d be taking Foden.
“He’s not played well at times for England, it’s not worked for him but he brings something different in a big squad. He’s just got that magic.”
Bellingham or Rogers? Tell us who should be England’s No 10 at the World Cup
08:50 , Mike JonesFew countries can match England’s depth of attacking talent right now – which is exactly what makes Thomas Tuchel’s No. 10 dilemma so fascinating.
Ahead of today’s World Cup squad announcement, the England manager still faces a huge decision over who should be trusted as the creative heartbeat of his side this summer.
Jude Bellingham may be the established star, but injuries, form and tactical balance have opened the door to serious competition.
Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers has quietly emerged as one of Tuchel’s most trusted options after an outstanding campaign for Aston Villa.
Who should start at No.10 this summer?
Palmer also left behind?
08:43 , Mike JonesIt is also sad news for Chelsea’s talisman Cole Palmer.
Much like Foden, Palmer is a quality technical player but has missed out after an underwhelming campaign.
The sheer intensity of competition for attacking spots made Palmer’s England position uncertain, and his poor performance against Japan only increased the doubts.
Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze can all play in the No. 10 role, while Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke appear likely to be first-choice options on the right flank.
It seems competition has won out over individual talent in this instance. Tuchel has previously acknowledge his lack of fear in dropping some of the bigger names.
Some big names left out
08:34 , Mike JonesWe’ll need to wait and see if the rumours turn out to be true but if that is the case then Thomas Tuchel has made some big calls.
One of them is over Phil Foden’s inclusion.
Foden has not had the greatest of seasons with Manchester City and has seemingly fallen behind Rayan Cherki in the pecking order at the club.
However, he remains an exceptional talent and one that would daunt opposing teams should they see his name on the team sheet.
Tuchel sees it differently though. Foden’s best position is No.10 and England have a gluttony of players that can perform here.
If the rumours are true then Tuchel believes others will do a better job at the tournament than Foden who has reportedly been left out.
No Shaw, Hall or Tomori?
08:26 , Mike JonesMoving on from Maguire, who is the only player confirmed to be missing out on the squad, we’ll stick to more rumours about England’s possible defence.
Luke Shaw was in a similar situation to Maguire. He was an experienced England international who had a strong season for Manchester United and is an expert in the left-back role which looks slightly weak.
Lewis Hall, similarly, has excelled at left-back for Newcastle this year but the Magpies have had an indifferent year at best (11th in the Premier League).
Fikayo Tomori, meanwhile, is plying his trade in Serie A with AC Milan and was backed to force his way into one of the centre-back spots.
Alas, all three defenders are reportedly out of the squad.
‘Shocked’ Harry Maguire left out of England’s World Cup squad
08:19 , Alex PattleHarry Maguire has been left out of England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel has begun informing certain players of their places – or lack thereof – ahead of an official squad announcement on Friday morning, and Maguire was the first major omission to be confirmed, with the news coming on Thursday evening.

Djed Spence set to be included in squad
08:15 , Mike JonesSky Sports News are reporting this morning that Tottenham defender Djed Spence has been included in the squad for the World Cup.
Spence has a broken jaw and will need to be assessed before he can travel to the tournament.
Maguire announces omission on social media
08:12 , Mike JonesTaking to X, formerly Twitter, Maguire confirmed his omission from Tuchel’s squad and revealed he was ‘shocked’ and ‘gutted’ at the decision.
“I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” he wrote.
“I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
“I wish the players, all the best this summer.”
England World Cup squad rumours
08:06 , Mike JonesGood morning, let’s recap the night before and all the leaks, rumours and confirmations about the England squad.
The first bit of big news came from TalkSport and a claim that Harry Maguire had missed out on a place in the squad.
Maguire has performed strongly for Manchester United in the last few months of the season but that was not enough to force his way ahead of the ‘five players’ above him in the pecking order according to previous comments from Thomas Tuchel.
What next for England after the squad announcement?
08:00 , Mike JonesOnce the squad is named, Thomas Tuchel and his Three Lions will travel to Florida in early June to complete a pre-World Cup training camp, including two friendly internationals against New Zealand (9pm BST, Saturday 6 June) and Costa Rica (9pm BST, Wednesday 10 June).
How can I follow the announcement?
07:52 , Mike JonesThe Independent will bring you a live stream of the event, while the official England app will also bring live coverage of the major announcement.
Former England internationals Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott will be part of the broadcast, which will be hosted by presenter Kyle Walker.
When will England’s World Cup 2026 squad be announced?
07:44 , Mike JonesEngland’s squad for the 2026 Fifa World Cup will be revealed on Friday 22 May from Wembley Stadium, London.
The announcement event will begin at 9.45am BST, with all 26 names set to follow soon after.

Friday 22 May 2026 00:00 , Mike JonesArsenal midfielder Declan Rice has candidly admitted he is prepared to be "hated one minute and loved the next" as England embark on their quest to secure a first World Cup trophy in 60 years.
Rice, who is on the cusp of a remarkable Premier League and Champions League double with Arsenal, is expected to play a pivotal role for the national team this summer.

Who has made the England squad?
Thursday 21 May 2026 23:50 , Mike JonesWith some big name omission already stated who is rumoured to have made the squad?
On the plane
Ivan Toney: The 30-year-old Al Ahli striker has not played for England for a year, but his 41 goals for the Saudi club appear to have convinced Tuchel he is right to join the World Cup squad. Is his inclusion the biggest shock of all?

On the plane
Anthony Gordon: The Newcastle winger is contention to start on the left wing, and has regularly featured there for Tuchel so far. He has racked up more than 20 goal contributions this season, making him one of the few England forwards in form.
Marcus Rashford: Goals and assists for Barcelona have pushed Rashford’s cause and Tuchel likes him, although the manager has also had cautionary words about wasting his talent. Rashford’s versatility, able to cover both wing and striker should Kane need it, helps his selection cause.

On the plane
Kobbie Mainoo: Returned to the England squad after strong performances for a rejuvenated Manchester United under Michael Carrick, and is set to be named in Tuchel’s squad despite looking a little sluggish defensively in the March friendly against Japan.
Who has made the England squad?
Thursday 21 May 2026 23:10 , Mike JonesNothing is confirmed but we feel confident in saying that Thomas Tuchel has a defensive unit in mind which looks like:
Nico O’Reilly: The Manchester City left-back was excellent in November’s World Cup qualifiers after impressing under Pep Guardiola this season, and his two-goal show in the Carabao Cup final only further secured his place in the England squad.
John Stones: The Manchester City defender has endured a difficult season with injury but, if he is fit, the experienced centre-back will play a role at the World Cup.
Marc Guehi: Stones’ fellow City centre-back is perhaps the most certain defender to start England’s first World Cup game.
Ezri Konsa: The Aston Villa centre-back has cemented his place as one of Tuchel’s most reliable options, having played more minutes under the German manager than any other defender.
Micah Richards urges Thomas Tuchel to include Phil Foden in England’s World Cup squad
Thursday 21 May 2026 23:00 , Mike JonesMicah Richards has called for Phil Foden to be included in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup, arguing that the Manchester City midfielder can produce “magic” when it’s needed.
Foden was the star as City earned a comfortable 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening, with the England international providing two assists including a superb backheel to set up Antoine Semenyo for the opener.

Left out
Phil Foden: Foden is a supremely talented player but he will not be travelling to North America, after a difficult season. The City midfielder has barely featured for England under Tuchel, and lost his place in Pep Guardiola’s team. He struggled playing as a false nine against Japan in the March internationals, in what was his final shot at securing a spot on the plane.

Adam Wharton: The Crystal Palace midfielder played in November’s match against Albania as the No 6, but clearly didn’t do enough to impress Tuchel and will not be travelling to the World Cup.
Morgan Gibbs-White: Gibbs-White was initially given minutes by Tuchel before being edged out by the sheer number of options in central roles. His sensational late-season form for Forest saw him climb back up the pecking order, but it wasn’t enough.

England manager is ‘the impossible job’ – but is it the dream role for a German?
Thursday 21 May 2026 22:12 , Lawrence OstlereFourteen men have managed the England men’s team since Sir Alf Ramsey won the World Cup in 1966, and none have come close to repeating the feat. Under high expectation, intense scrutiny and crippling pressure, a series of England managers have been hounded, humiliated, abused and, in Sam Allardyce’s case, stung by a ruthless media. No wonder Graham Taylor called it “the impossible job”.

England enter the tournament among the strong favourites, with Tuchel eager to break a 60-year wait for silverware for the men’s senior team since the 1966 World Cup, starting with the 26 names to travel to the United States next month.
England have been drawn in Group L with Croatia, Ghana and Panama, with the first game against Luka Modric’s side on 17 June in Arlington, Texas.
Further tests against Ghana on 23 June in Boston and Panama in New York on 27 June will decide England’s fate as they bid to advance to the last 32 in this 48-team tournament.

Here’s who we think have been left out:
Cole Palmer
Phil Foden
Harry Maguire (confirmed)
Levi Colwill
Luke Shaw
Adam Wharton
Fikayo Tomori
Lewis Hall
Morgan Gibbs-White looks to be excluded

What's going on with Ollie Watkins?
Thursday 21 May 2026 20:30 , Mike JonesSurely, Aston Villa’s main striker has made it on the plane?
The BBC and TalkSport are saying that he has though there appears to still be some doubts about that.
Of course, we’ll know for sure tomorrow morning when Thomas Tuchel addresses the media.

Thursday 21 May 2026 20:00 , Mike JonesNo room for Colwill or Hall?
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:59 , Mike JonesLevi Colwill has had a season inflicted by injury but has been available for Chelsea’s last two matches.
He had hoped to force his way into the squad in the final stages of the season but it looks unlikely to be enough time for the defender.
With Colwill, Maguire and Tomori all set to miss out it seems as though Man City’s John Stones may get a call up as cover.
Also rumoured to be left out is Newcastle’s Lewis Hall which would lend credence to the rumour that Myles Lewis-Skelly might have made it.
Possible omissions
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:55 , Mike JonesJarrod Bowen is reportedly out of the squad according to TalkSport’s Alex Crook.
And, there are mumurings that Ollie Watkins, fresh off a win in the Europa League with Aston Villa, hasn’t made.
These are just rumours of course and could be wide of the mark.
Ivan Toney makes the squad
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:31 , Mike JonesIn another surprise, Ivan Toney has made the squad and will be a back up to Harry Kane.
Toney, who plays for Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli, was not expected to make the squad having only been called up for England’s international last summer.
When will England prepare for the World Cup?
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:30 , Mike JonesOnce Thomas Tuchel names his squad tomorrow morning, the World Cup preparations will begin.
England warm-up for the tournament with friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica.
They then start their World Cup campaign against Croatia on 17 June, before further group games against Ghana and Panama.
What other rumours are there?
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:20 , Mike JonesOther than Harry Maguire, the players we think have been left out of the squad are only rumoured.
Maguire himself confirmed his omission but we may have to wait until tomorrow morning to be sure of the rest of the squad.
That said, Cole Palmer and Adam Wharton - two heavily influential midfielders - are also being tipped to have been left out.
TalkSport report that Wharton has been told of his omission while The Athletic say Palmer is out.
Phil Foden another huge omission
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:14 , Mike JonesThis rumour comes from TalkSport again, backed up by BBC reporting, which says that Manchester City’s Phil Foden will not make the squad.
Foden was selected in Tuchel’s March squads. He has played 49 times for England but started only 22 Premier League games for City this season
He has scored seven goals and made five assists in 32 top-flight appearances.
With competition high for Foden’s preferred No. 10 positions it seems the Man City midfielder has not done enough to impress Tuchel.
Other rumoured omissions
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:11 , Mike JonesNews is coming through that Luke Shaw and Fikayo Tomori have also been left out of the squad with the BBC reporting that there is now place for either defender.
Shaw was named in Tuchel's 55-man provisional squad given Man Utd’s season ending form but he has reportedly not made the cut.
Newcastle's Dan Burn and Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly are in line to be called up instead.
When will the England squad be named?
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:06 , Mike JonesWe’re expecting the England squad to be named about 10am BST tomorrow morning, with the FA-produced livestream due to begin at 9.45am BST.
Miguel Delaney and Lawrence Ostlere will be at Wembley a little after that to listen to Thomas Tuchel speak.

Thursday 21 May 2026 19:03 , Lawrence OstlereThomas Tuchel names his England squad for the 2026 World Cup on Friday morning, and we already know some big names will miss out – including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Harry Magiure.

Harry Maguire omitted from England squad
Thursday 21 May 2026 19:00 , Mike JonesTalkSport first reported the news that Manchester United’s Harry Maguire will miss out on a place at the World Cup.
Maguire has undergone something of a resurgence under Michael Carrick towards the end of the season and believed he had made a case to push for the squad.
That is not so with the player also taking to social media to confirm his omission.
