As a passionate advocate for hygienically prepared coffee, I have embarked on a crusade to revolution is the way local coffee outlets serve their customers. Recently, I observed a common practice among coffee makers, particularly in local kopitiams, that raises serious concerns about hygiene standards.

It's a common sight to see coffee makers tasting the coffee or teh tarik before serving it to customers. While this may seem like a standard procedure handed down by generations, it poses significant risks to customer health.

The practice involves using a spoon to taste the coffee, which is then dipped into a pot of hot water to sanitise it. While this may appear to be a sufficient measure for the first cup, the same spoon is often reused for subsequent cups under the belief that the hot water kills any germs from the barrister's lips.

However, I remain skeptical of this practice. Even if the germs are indeed eliminated, the thought of someone tasting my coffee before I do is off-putting. To address this issue, I have taken proactive steps to educate and persuade local coffee outlets to change their practices.

In February 2024, I successfully convinced two outlets, the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club and Ah Yum Cafe in Bukit Damansara, to adopt a new approach to serving coffee. They now prepare kopi or Nescafe tarik without tasting it beforehand.

Additionally, I request that they provide condensed and evaporated milk separately, allowing me to mix it myself without any contact with the barrister's lips.

I urge other coffee outlets to follow suit to prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as typhoid. Adopting these simple yet effective measures can help ensure the safety and satisfaction of customers.

Remember, it's better to be safe than sorry. Join me in this coffee-making revolution for a healthier and happier coffee experience!
