THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday said that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) to establish a collaborative framework for translating climate and weather forecasts into possible regulatory actions.
Key areas for cooperation include the establishment of a data exchange framework which will allow it to utilize climate and weather forecast data in deciding whether to resume or suspend Wholesale Electricity Spot Market operations.
“With this partnership, we are confident that by working together, we can transform scientific knowledge into practical tools that will help enhance planning, improve resilience and strengthen our institutions for the Filipino people,” Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando said.
The ERC said that its participation would support Pagasa’s Seasonal-to-Seasonal Climate Prediction application, which is designed to assist government agencies in preparing for extreme weather events.
“Overall, this whole-of-government approach reflects our shared responsibility to ensure that public institutions work together in addressing challenges that are caused by climate variability and change,” ERC Chairman and CEO Francis Saturnino Juan said.
