Erewhon, the celeb-magnet California grocery store known for its $20 smoothies and all-around expensive staples, has opened its first outpost outside of Los Angeles County.
The grocer opened its newest location in Thousand Oaks, California, about 40 miles northwest of LA, last Thursday.
“As we open the doors to our new store, we’re excited to share our uncompromising commitment to organic, exceptional-quality food and responsible sourcing with the Thousand Oaks community,” the company wrote on Instagram.
The Thousand Oaks storefront is Erewhon’s first grocery location outside of Los Angeles.
Last year, the chain opened an Erewhon Tonic Bar in Manhattan as part of a private, members-only wellness club called Kith Ivy. The spot is exclusive to members and requires $36,000 in initiation fees and a $7,000 annual membership to access.
The pricey membership fee likely won’t be a sticker shock for most Erewhon shoppers. The chain, founded in 1966, has a reputation for selling high-quality and organic groceries — at an elevated cost.
Erewhon is best known for its smoothies, which retail for upwards of $20, and have become somewhat of a status symbol in LA. The store has partnered with celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, who have created their own unique blends for the store to sell.
The brand has also made headlines for selling other expensive food items, like a single Japanese strawberry for $19, sea moss shells for $40 and specialty bottled water for $25.
It also gained attention in July after debuting its latest viral product: a cup of water that costs $12.
Erewhon’s “Sacred Water,” which came as a partnership with shower filter brand Jolie, was described the store as “a clarified herbal tonic infused with Organic Jasmine Tea and Botanical Extracts — served as a refreshing elixir poured over ice.”

Erewhon has big plans to open more storefronts in 2027 including another location outside of LA County, the chain confirmed to Grocery Dive.
That location will open in Costa Mesa, California, a city 40 miles south of LA, in September 2027. In June 2027, the chain plans to open a store in downtown LA.
Erewhon also plans to reopen its Pacific Palisades location in January, two years after the store closed due to the highly destructive wildfire.
The Independent has contacted Erewhon for more information.
