SEMPORNA’S business landscape came under intense scrutiny as the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) launched a two-day integrated operation targeting illegal activities in the district.
Conducted between 1 and 2 April, the operation included surprise inspections of 40 resorts and holiday centres.
ESSCOM Commander Datuk Victor B Sanjos revealed that 28 undocumented immigrants were detained and a variety of offences detected, with the total value of enforcement actions, fines, and seizures estimated at RM680,250.
“This operation is a continuous effort to ensure compliance with the licensing requirements of tourism premises, as well as to curb illegal activities that could compromise safety and the image of the tourism sector in Semporna,” he said, underlining the ongoing commitment to maintain standards in the tourism industry.
Victor explained that the operation also concentrated on enforcing immigration laws, business regulations, employment standards, customs requirements, and offences related to protected wildlife.
“In addition, our focus is on the enforcement of laws concerning immigration, business, employment, customs, and offences related to protected wildlife,” he added.
The operation involved collaboration with four key agencies: the Labour Department (JTK), the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), the Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP), and the Semporna District Council (MDS).
These agencies issued numerous fines and notices addressing compliance failures in employment law, corporate management, data protection, and business licensing and operations.
Victor confirmed that a total of 165 notices and fines were issued by the participating enforcement agencies, demonstrating a coordinated approach to safeguarding public safety and the integrity of Semporna’s tourism sector. - April 2, 2026
