SEMPORNA: A coordinated security operation in Semporna has resulted in the arrest of 28 illegal immigrants and the seizure of goods valued at over RM680,000.
The two-day integrated operation, led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), involved 269 personnel from multiple enforcement agencies inspecting approximately 40 resorts, business premises, and squatter settlements.
ESSCOM commander Datuk Victor Sanjos stated the operation aimed to ensure compliance with tourism licensing and combat illegal activities affecting the district’s safety and image. He said the focus was on enforcing laws covering immigration, business, employment, customs, and wildlife protection.
The Immigration Department detained the 28 individuals under the Immigration Act 1959/63. The Manpower Department issued 32 compounds for various offences under the Employment Act 1955.
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living issued seven compounds under the Control of Supplies Act and the Consumer Protection Act. The Royal Malaysian Customs Department seized unlicensed liquor worth RM11,642.19, including tax.
The Wildlife Department also seized various wildlife products, including pork, turtles, and magpies, with an estimated value of RM1,300. The Semporna District Council issued 33 compounds for by-law violations, such as operating a business without a license.
Victor explained that the integrated operation, part of ESSCOM’s Operation Sanggah, strengthens security and helps agencies ensure legal compliance in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone. He advised the public to report security incidents to the ESSCOM Operation Centre.
