TAWAU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) remains a crucial pillar of security in Eastern Sabah, marking 12 years of operations with continued success in tackling cross-border crime threats.

Mohd. Zaki Harry Susanto, Advisor to the Sabah Crime Prevention Organisation (PPDJS), highlighted that ESSCOM was established in 2013 following the Lahad Datu intrusion and has played a vital role in coordinating security operations with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone).

“ESSCOM has achieved significant success, notably reducing kidnapping for ransom cases, smuggling activities, and illegal immigration,” Zaki said in a statement marking the anniversary.

“In the past 12 years, 59 kidnapping attempts were foiled, over 16,000 illegal immigrants were detained in joint operations, and more than 500 foreign fishing boats were either expelled or apprehended for trespassing on Malaysian waters.”

Zaki attributed these successes to the use of advanced technology, such as radar and drones, and close cooperation with neighboring countries like the Philippines and Indonesia through trilateral patrols.

“ESSCOM has restored confidence among the local community and investors in the security of the ESSZone, which was once considered a high-risk area,” he added.

Despite these achievements, Zaki emphasized the need for ESSCOM to strengthen its capabilities through more assets, intensive tactical training, and community involvement as the eyes and ears of security agencies.

“Security threats are becoming more complex. ESSCOM must remain prepared to face any challenges, including cybercrime, arms smuggling, and human trafficking,” he said.

ESSCOM remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of Eastern Sabah, both on land and at sea, despite the calm environment. Zaki reminded that unexpected incidents, like the recent earthquake in Myanmar, should serve as a reminder that preparedness is key.

"Though Eastern Sabah is peaceful, we must always be vigilant. ESSCOM continues to receive the support and appreciation of the ESSZone community," he concluded.
