TAWAU: The East Coast Sabah Special Security Area (Esscom) has been urged to strengthen its security presence and visibility, particularly near tourism resorts along Sabah’s east coast.
Sabah Drug and Crime Prevention Organisation (PPDJS) adviser Mohd Zaki Harry Susanto (pic) said regular deployment of security personnel could boost tourist confidence and deter potential offenders.
He also commended security forces for swiftly apprehending a person suspected of attempting to assault a Chinese female tourist in Semporna recently.
Zaki said sexual crimes involving tourists could cause trauma to victims and affect perceptions of Sabah, particularly when such incidents are circulated through Chinese media and social media platforms.
He urged Esscom, police, resort operators and relevant agencies to strengthen maritime and coastal patrols, while resorts should enhance access control, CCTV monitoring, emergency complaint channels and staff training in handling incidents.
