European Union funded partners are providing help in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country, EU Crisis Commissioner Hadja Lahbib announced on Thursday.
"We are following the situation with our field staff and partners there," Lahbib said.
The European Commission is "ready to step up assistance," she added.
EU-funded aid currently deployed in Venezuela includes rescue operations carried out by the Red Cross, a spokeswoman for the European Commission stated.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa expressed their condolences in posts in Spanish on X earlier on Thursday.
"I am thinking especially of the victims and their families. We are with you," von der Leyen wrote.
"We extend all our solidarity and support to the Venezuelan people in these moments of immense grief," Costa wrote.
"The European Union stands ready to support emergency response efforts in cooperation with our humanitarian partners and to stand by Venezuela during these difficult times," he added.
