Actor Hunter Schafer has revealed she underwent gender-affirming surgery last December.
The 27-year-old, who rose to prominence playing transgender teenager Jules Vaughn in HBO's drama Euphoria alongside Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, confirmed the procedure in a new interview.
Speaking to Elle magazine, she revealed she underwent lower body surgery – which alters a person's genitals to align with their gender identity.
She said: "Maybe it’s a good thing to share, for the tension I was talking about between those two worlds (reality and ideology).
"I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much."
She continued: "As I said, for a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it."
Schafer stressed that while every trans person is different, medically transitioning was right for her.
During her recovery, she rented a large apartment where friends and family visited while she was required to rest lying down.
She said: "I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing."
The actor noted significant personal changes since first starring in Euphoria, which launched in 2019.
Describing herself as "just a baby" at the time, she added: "I was a different person in a lot of ways. I was really introverted and not set on performing in front of people at all. There was this shell that was there that’s not with me any more."
Schafer, who has previously dated Spanish pop singer Rosalía and fellow Euphoria actor Dominic Fike, added: "I haven’t had a relationship that’s been longer than two years, and I’ve heard the two-year mark is when it gets more like a partnership rather than some passionate whatever-it-is. Something that feels more sacred and intentional."
Schafer, who transitioned at age 14, has previously called the constant conversations about her being trans “demeaning” and “reductive.”
“Especially after high school, I was sick of talking about it. I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition,” she said in an April 2024 interview with GQ, “and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.”
