Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice comes to the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) this September, offering a playful yet poignant reimagining of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, this time told from the woman’s perspective.

Directed by award-winning theatre-maker Ghafir Akbar, the production runs from 18 to 27 September 2026 at The Studio, JCPAC, bringing together a cast of established Malaysian theatre practitioners and emerging talent.

At its heart, Eurydice explores grief, memory and the difficulty of saying goodbye. Rather than treating the story as a sombre retelling, Ruhl’s genre-defying play moves between humour, surrealism and heartbreak, using contemporary characters and inventive theatrical imagery to explore its central themes.

Vinna Law takes on the title role, returning to the Malaysian stage after building her career in London. She is joined by Jo Kukathas, Anne James and Sukania Venugopal as the mischievous chorus of the Underworld, alongside theatre veterans Gavin Yap and Terence Swampillai. Rising performer Tinesh Janaki Raman plays Orpheus.

Ruhl’s interpretation shifts the familiar focus of the Greek myth, giving Eurydice her own voice and placing her memories, relationships and choices at the centre of the story. The result is a production that balances the emotional weight of loss with moments of wit and theatrical play.

The intimate setting of JCPAC’s Studio further brings the audience into the world of the Underworld, creating a close-up theatrical experience for a story that moves between the living and the dead.
