The differences between the match-going experience in Europe and the United States has been the subject of much debate at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
So much has been made about the prices in the United States compared to those that soccer fans generally encounter around the world.
That, along with the difference in atmosphere and the hydration breaks, have been major talking points during this year’s tournament.
There’s nothing quite like a supporter who is not accustomed to US food and pricing expressing their surprise at photos posted online, however. It is a theme of this year’s World Cup, after all.
Fan shocked at US ‘pricing’ for potato and cheese dumplings
The popular Footy Scran account on social media shared an image of a rather sad looking potato and cheese dumpling in a box, an image that was reportedly taken at the France vs Iraq game held at the Philadelphia Stadium in Philadelphia.
A Kylian Mbappe brace and a goal from reigning Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele gave France what was a relatively routine 3-0 victory, although the game was delayed for around two hours due to lightning strikes in the area.
While the game may not live long in the general memory, an image posted of the food for the rather high price of $44.46 (roughly £34) including a beer went viral on social media platform X.
One fan even commented: “Even by US standards that is HORRID.”
Look out for more photos and comments like this. It will no doubt be fascinating for Americans to see how fans from other countries view their stadium experience, and equally as interesting for those in the US to respond.
Even the proudest American, however, would surely admit that this particular photo was reasonably bleak.
It may not provide an accurate reflection on the food and drink options as a whole but it certainly continued to spark debate.
